Building Services Engineer, Mechanical Engineer
Job Summary
The Modernization Project Office (MPO) is responsible for engineering, design, cost estimating, scheduling, and project controls on conventional construction projects. As a member of the MPO, the Mechanical Inspector will inspect plumbing, mechanical, and HVAC work on new construction and renovation projects to ensure conformance with contract documents and applicable codes and standards.
Responsibilities- Prepare daily narrative reports.
- Verify work performed on contractor payment applications.
- Coordinate construction work with facility operations and other stakeholders.
- Ensure quality of work and contractor compliance with contract drawings and specifications.
- Verify installation against shop drawings and specifications.
- Conform to contractual safety requirements.
- Bachelor of Science degree or NICET III certification or comparable combination of education and experience.
- 5 or more years’ experience in construction inspection of mechanical, plumbing & HVAC.
- Proficiency in Microsoft Office (Word, Excel, Outlook).
- Working knowledge of latest mechanical and plumbing ICC building codes and testing criteria for all types of mechanical systems.
- Valid driver's license.
- Ability to work overtime on weekends or extended hours to accommodate contractor work schedules.
- Bachelor's degree in mechanical engineering.
- 10 or more years’ experience in construction inspection of mechanical, plumbing & HVAC.
- ICC Certified Mechanical Inspector.
- NICET Level II and III Certification.
- Knowledge of fire‑stopping, fire‑rated construction, and/or fire‑proofing.
- OSHA 30‑hour training.
- Working knowledge of latest mechanical & plumbing ICC building codes and testing criteria.
- This position is limited to U.S. citizens due to site security requirements; a security clearance is not required at this time.
- Valid driver's license required.
- Ability to work overtime on weekends or extended hours to accommodate contractor work schedules.
- Physical coordination and balance required.
- Continuous walking/standing.
- Hearing speech and alarms.
- Good near vision; depth perception; normal color vision.
- Heavy lifting up to 40 lbs; frequent bending/twisting.
- Use of vertical ladders (greater than 4 ft).
- Ability to work in warm and cold environments (outdoors).
Brookhaven Laboratory offers a competitive salary range of $92,050–$156,150 per year, commensurate with qualifications, education, and experience, and a comprehensive benefits program.
