Overview
The Code Compliance Specialist 1, SG-18 will be assigned to the Capital Bureau and reports to the Code Compliance Specialist 2, SG-23.
Responsibilities- Review and inspect building plans and building permit applications for compliance with the NYS Uniform Fire, Building and Energy Codes.
- Schedule, coordinate and conduct compliance inspections of existing buildings, new construction projects, alterations, repairs and demolitions.
- Meet with architects and engineers to respond to questions and provide technical information on code requirements.
- Inspect new construction projects to verify that approved building plans are in compliance with the Uniform Code, specifications and good construction practices.
- Inspect existing buildings to determine compliance with the Uniform Code and recommend any corrective actions to resolve violations.
- Recommend to supervisor legal orders and notices such as stop work orders, compliance notices and notices forbidding occupancy.
- This position may require up to 50% travel.
Must have a current certification as a Code Enforcement Official pursuant to Title 19 NYCRR, Part 434 or Part 1208 AND
- The enforcement, inspection, development, or teaching of building or fire codes.
- The design of buildings in a position such as a specifications writer, draftsperson, architect, or engineer.
- Design, construction, or inspection of bridges and/or highways.
- Labor law, wage or health and safety inspections/investigations not primarily related to building or fire codes.
- Experience as a firefighter where responsibilities do not include conducting fire or building code inspections as a primary assignment.
- Clerical or support duties associated with fire or building code inspections are not considered qualifying experience.
- Degrees in other fields will not be substituted in lieu of the specific specialized degrees listed above.
- Your degree must have been awarded by a college or university accredited by a regional, national, or specialized agency recognized as an accrediting agency by the U.S. Department of Education. Minimum Qualifications
- An associate degree may substitute for two years of specialized experience.
- Bachelor's degree may substitute for four years of specialized experience.
- Master's degree may substitute for five years of specialized experience.
- J.D. may substitute for six years of specialized experience.
At least one year of permanent or contingent‑permanent qualifying service as a Senior Safety & Health Inspector, SG 18 and a current certification as a Code Enforcement Official pursuant to Title 19 NYCRR, Part 434 or Part 1208.

the transfer cannot be a second consecutive transfer resulting in an advancement of more than two salary grades. For all transfers noted, a comprehensive list of titles approved for transfer is available through Civil Service GOT‑IT at .
- The qualifications for appointment and as a condition of employment to the Code Compliance Specialist 1 is dependent upon active certification as a Code Enforcement Official pursuant to Title 19 NYCRR Part 434 or Part 1208.
