The mission of The New York Times is to seek the truth and help people understand the world. Independent journalism is at the heart of all we do as a company. The New York Times is looking for an experienced and versatile journalist to join the National desk as a religion correspondent.
You will bring a sophisticated and curious approach to the intersections of religion, politics, culture and identity with a particular emphasis on Jewish life in America. You will experiment with new story forms and bring Times journalism to a global audience across digital, print and other media.
Responsibilities- You are the authority on your beat, driving coverage, developing an array of sources, delivering scoops and pitching important stories that define the coverage.
- You cover live and breaking news, enterprise, and investigations.
- You demonstrate a sharp eye for original story ideas, including specific targets or broad themes.
- You write on deadline, receiving feedback and edits.
- You demonstrate familiarity with audience tactics to reach new readers across platforms.
- You collaborate with other reporters.
- You work with colleagues across Photo, Video, Audio, and other departments to bring stories to life in a variety of formats across all NYT products.
- You demonstrate support and understanding of our value of journalistic independence and a strong commitment to our mission to seek the truth and help people understand the world.
- This role reports to a national editor.
- 5+ years of reporting and writing experience.
- Demonstrated experience juggling breaking news, smart analysis and ambitious enterprise.
- Detailed and expert understanding of Judaism and clarity about the intricacies of its place in America.
- Experience in a deadline‑oriented environment.
- Reporting and writing experience for a global news organization.
- Collegial and collaborative behavior, integrity with assignments.
- Interest in directly engaging with readers to deepen their relationships with The Times.
- Commitment to The New York Times' strategy, ethics, standards and mission for both themselves, their team, stringers and colleagues.
