ABOUT THIS ROLE

The Senior Medical Writer (SMW) is a scientific and strategic content lead within the medical team. This individual is responsible for the independent development of high-quality, scientifically rigorous, and behaviorally informed content across assigned brands. The SMW plays a critical role in ensuring that all medical deliverables ladder up to brand strategy, reflect deep therapeutic understanding, and uphold The Bloc’s standards for accuracy, clarity, and creativity.

A unique aspect of this role at The Bloc is the SMW’s close partnership with the promotional copywriting team to develop high‑science promotional content for HCP audiences. This requires fluency in both scientific communication and the creative process, ensuring that complex data becomes clear, credible, and compelling storytelling.

This role requires strong scientific acumen, editorial precision, strategic awareness, creative partnership, client-facing confidence, and an ability to manage multiple projects in a fast-paced environment.

EXPECTATIONS AND DELIVERABLES
  • Lead the scientific narrative for assigned brands. The SMW ensures all medical content reflects deep scientific understanding, aligns with brand strategy, and advances BECOMMS-driven behavior change. They proactively elevate discussions by bringing forward insights, data, and recommendations that strengthen the scientific foundation of the work.
  • Shape high-science promotional storytelling through close partnership with creative teams. The SMW collaborates deeply with promotional copywriters and creative partners to transform scientific data into powerful promotional narratives for HCP audiences. They ensure medical and creative thinking move in lockstep, contributing to work that is both scientifically sound and creatively breakthrough.
  • Drive efficient planning, workflow excellence, and proactive project management. The SMW anticipates challenges, manages timelines, identifies risks, and ensures content moves smoothly through internal and external review processes. They maintain clear communication with internal teams to support seamless execution across all deliverables.
  • Build trusted relationships with clients as a scientific and strategic partner. The SMW contributes meaningfully to client discussions, provides clear and confident scientific rationale, and supports advisory boards, workshops, and review meetings. They help clients feel supported, informed, and confident in the agency’s scientific stewardship.
  • Model excellence and support the growth of medical team talent. The SMW mentors junior writers, contributes to onboarding, shares scientific knowledge, and demonstrates the standards expected of medical content leaders. They work with their manager to define personal growth goals while helping strengthen the overall medical discipline.

DAY TO DAY RESPONSIBILITIES
  • Researches and synthesizes scientific literature.
  • Writes and annotates a wide range of materials.
  • Supports creative partners by providing high-science input into promotional concept development and copy.
  • Collaborates with cross-functional teams to move work through approvals.
  • Participates in client meetings and scientific discussions.
  • Supports live meetings and captures insights.
  • Monitors therapeutic landscape and provides updates.
QUALIFICATIONS
  • Advanced scientific degree (PhD, Pharm

    D, MD, or equivalent).
  • 1–3 years medical communications/agency experience.
  • Demonstrated ability to lead medical content development independently.
  • Exceptional scientific literacy and writing ability.
  • Ability to collaborate closely with creative teams and support high-science promotional work.
  • Strong communication and client-interaction skills.
  • Ability to manage multiple projects in a fast-paced environment.
  • Familiarity with pharma advertising standards and regulatory considerations.
