Overview

The Atlantic is seeking a senior designer to spearhead visual design for Consumer Strategy & Growth. This team is responsible for subscriber growth—acquiring new subscribers and engaging and retaining existing ones—which is essential to building a sustainable future for our journalism.

In this critical creative role, you will own and elevate the visual expression of our subscriber-facing campaigns across the entire lifecycle: research, conceptualization, planning, production, testing, and optimization. Working in close collaboration with copywriters, growth-marketing strategists, data analysts, editorial, and other partners across the organization, you will develop creative that is not only bold, ambitious, and on-brand but also strategically rooted and shaped by data and audience insights.

This is a hands-on leadership role: you’ll set art direction for marketing campaigns, execute high-quality design work, and manage and mentor an associate designer. From conceptual thinking to pixel pushing, this role is for a designer who can balance creative ambition with operational excellence.

Responsibilities
  • Partner with copywriters to develop integrated creative concepts that bring together strong storytelling and elegant design
  • Lead art direction for marketing campaigns that span a wide range of channels, including email, paid marketing, web, and print, adapting designs to platform-specific best practices
  • Translate data, insights, and testing results into design decisions that drive performance
  • Present creative concepts and design rationale to stakeholders, clearly connecting creative choices to business goals and audience impact
  • Manage, support, and mentor an associate designer, providing feedback, guidance, and growth opportunities
  • Lead brainstorms and ideation sessions, contributing original ideas and helping others sharpen theirs
  • Establish and refine workflows and processes to improve efficiency, consistency, and creative quality
Requirements
  • Strong conceptual thinker who enjoys exploring storytelling and visual metaphor
  • Mastery of core design principles including typography, composition, color, visual hierarchy, and layout
  • Proven experience in brand identity and marketing design
  • Fluency in Adobe Creative Suite and Figma
  • Motion design and illustration experience
  • Strong communication skills: able to articulate ideas, lead brainstorms, clarify feedback from stakeholders, and deliver a killer presentation
  • A deep appreciation for brand integrity and consistency
  • A research-driven mindset: studying brand history, competitive landscapes, and audience insights to inform creative work
  • 5+ years of professional experience in advertising, marketing, agency, or design studio environments
Preferred Qualifications
  • Experience managing or mentoring an associate designer

Candidates must apply with a link to an online portfolio or design samples. Applicants without samples will not be considered.

Salary Minimum: $87,000;
Salary Maximum: $100,000

This role is based in New York City.
