Overview
The Atlantic is seeking a senior designer to spearhead visual design for Consumer Strategy & Growth. This team is responsible for subscriber growth—acquiring new subscribers and engaging and retaining existing ones—which is essential to building a sustainable future for our journalism.
In this critical creative role, you will own and elevate the visual expression of our subscriber-facing campaigns across the entire lifecycle: research, conceptualization, planning, production, testing, and optimization. Working in close collaboration with copywriters, growth-marketing strategists, data analysts, editorial, and other partners across the organization, you will develop creative that is not only bold, ambitious, and on-brand but also strategically rooted and shaped by data and audience insights.
This is a hands-on leadership role: you’ll set art direction for marketing campaigns, execute high-quality design work, and manage and mentor an associate designer. From conceptual thinking to pixel pushing, this role is for a designer who can balance creative ambition with operational excellence.
Responsibilities- Partner with copywriters to develop integrated creative concepts that bring together strong storytelling and elegant design
- Lead art direction for marketing campaigns that span a wide range of channels, including email, paid marketing, web, and print, adapting designs to platform-specific best practices
- Translate data, insights, and testing results into design decisions that drive performance
- Present creative concepts and design rationale to stakeholders, clearly connecting creative choices to business goals and audience impact
- Manage, support, and mentor an associate designer, providing feedback, guidance, and growth opportunities
- Lead brainstorms and ideation sessions, contributing original ideas and helping others sharpen theirs
- Establish and refine workflows and processes to improve efficiency, consistency, and creative quality
- Strong conceptual thinker who enjoys exploring storytelling and visual metaphor
- Mastery of core design principles including typography, composition, color, visual hierarchy, and layout
- Proven experience in brand identity and marketing design
- Fluency in Adobe Creative Suite and Figma
- Motion design and illustration experience
- Strong communication skills: able to articulate ideas, lead brainstorms, clarify feedback from stakeholders, and deliver a killer presentation
- A deep appreciation for brand integrity and consistency
- A research-driven mindset: studying brand history, competitive landscapes, and audience insights to inform creative work
- 5+ years of professional experience in advertising, marketing, agency, or design studio environments
- Experience managing or mentoring an associate designer

Salary Minimum: $87,000;
Salary Maximum: $100,000
This role is based in New York City.
