Overview

The New York Times is looking for a reporter to join the Live team in New York, a group of editors and reporters who work on the biggest breaking stories from around the world. This is a general assignment position requiring broad experience covering national and international news, with the ability to write with authority on a wide variety of topics in an array of formats.

The reporter will cover major breaking stories wherever they occur and also write engaging features to expand reach beyond habitual readers.

The reporter should be a quick study, able to build relationships across departments and time zones. Candidates should have an established track record of field reporting and source development, and the ability to write clearly and with style. The role favors a team player who is interested in driving the evolution of news coverage in the digital age and in telling stories in new ways.

This is an in-office position based in New York City with regular attendance in the office four days a week. There may be some flexibility to work remotely per departmental guidance. The standard work schedule is eight hours a day, five days a week, including one weekend day.

Responsibilities:

  • Report on big breaking news, often in partnership with other desks, during U.S. hours.
  • Generate story ideas to complement coverage of major news events, with an emphasis on engaging, reader-friendly formats.
  • Work openly and collaboratively with reporters and editors in other time zones to keep developing stories updated, ensuring seamless continuous coverage.
  • Collaborate with colleagues across Photo, Video, Audio and other departments to bring stories to life in a variety of formats across all Times products.
  • Demonstrate steadfast adherence to The New York Times standards of ethics, accuracy and fairness, even in high-pressure situations.

Qualities &

Experience:

  • Extensive experience reporting on international and national news in a large newsroom.
  • Strong news judgment, quick decision making, and the ability to pivot among stories and topics.
  • Experience working fast on deadline, handling evolving storylines, and writing about a broad range of topics quickly and with authority.
  • Excellent writing skills and a strong command of grammar and style.
  • Experience developing sources, usually from afar.
  • Experience in various story forms, from traditional lede to live blogs and reader-friendly explainers that synthesize a complex event.
  • Familiarity with key issues in international and U.S. news.
  • Ability to work collaboratively with colleagues at all levels in a newsroom.
  • A passion for covering news in engaging ways and for infusing it into live and breaking news.
  • Creativity in identifying and developing news features with strong appeal to digital readers, especially outside the United States.
  • A desire to learn new tools and journalism forms, and an interest in shaping them for the future.
  • A reader-focused outlook that serves curious digital audiences.
  • A self-starter with excellent technical proficiency and communication skills who can work productively with supervising editors and colleagues in the U.S., Europe and Asia.
  • Fluency in at least one non-English language.

Compensation
:
The annual base pay range for this role is between $ and $140,000 USD.
