New York Times Opinion is seeking a producer to work on Interesting Times, the audio and video podcast hosted by columnist Ross Douthat. You should have an enthusiasm for heterodox ideas on politics, technology, culture, and religion. You should relish the opportunity to showcase voices in the conservative landscape in sophisticated and surprising ways. This will be a highly collaborative role and you will be responsible for a wide range of tasks, including: pitching, researching, preinterviewing, scripting, and fluency in post‑production editing across both audio and video formats.
These formats can vary widely – from long‑form interviews to vertical videos – but the constant is the driving curiosity and range that defines Interesting Times.
This is an in‑office position based in New York and includes regular attendance in the office four days each week. There may be some flexibility to work remotely per your departmental guidance.
Responsibilities- Regularly pitch ideas for guests, episode topics, and story formats that are surprising and unique
- Assist in executing a creative vision for how best to tell these stories across different formats in collaboration with colleagues
- Research, preinterview, and script full episodes, with guidance from more senior producers and editors
- Work with editors and senior producers to build a structure for episodes around ideas that are timely and relevant
- Script intros and social videos with multimedia assets (photo, graphics, and archival audio and video)
- Produce/ edit audio and video shorts and full episodes
- Book and schedule guests and recordings
- Assist in writing show copy and headlines as needed
- Keep track of workflow for ongoing projects, short and long‑term
- Direct host and guests in the studio or field, autonomously or in collaboration with senior colleagues
- Work collaboratively with a variety of departments
- Take and give feedback

- Report to the Executive Producer of Interesting Times
- 5+ years of practical video or audio journalism experience
- Fluency with Adobe Premiere Pro and/or Pro Tools
- Research skills for preparing and structuring long‑form narrative and ideas interviews
- Experience booking interviews, writing prep documents and interview questions, producing interviews on tight deadlines
- Experience with You Tube and social video strategy
- Intellectual omnivore with interests in politics and political culture, and curiosity to explore other topics
- Strong organizational skills, attention to detail, deadlines, news judgment and time‑management
- Demonstrated success in creating innovative content under pressure
- Thrives on adapting to a changing media environment
- Experience working with talent
- Familiarity with the conservative intellectual and media landscape
- Familiarity with Adobe Illustrator, Photoshop and After Effects
- Knowledge of the changing social media landscape as it relates to video

Annual base pay range: $80,952.15 - $90,000 USD
