This Letters position plays a key role in growing reader engagement and strengthening the Opinion section's digital presence by selecting, editing, and soliciting compelling letters.
The Wall Street Journal's Opinion section is seeking a Letters Editor to join our growing editorial team in New York. This role is ideal for a collaborative editor with sharp news judgment and knowledge of current affairs, excellent editing skills and a commitment to high journalistic standards. The Letters Editor is responsible for selecting and editing the daily Letters to the Editor column, published Monday through Saturday in print and online.
The position requires a keen sense of what makes a compelling read, the ability to work accurately and efficiently under deadline pressure, and the judgment to handle reader feedback with professionalism and courtesy.
The Journal is looking for a candidate who is eager to expand reader engagement by fostering thoughtful debate and growing the Letters audience across digital platforms. This will include soliciting letters on occasion to respond to Journal articles. The candidate should be able to write headlines that are accurate and attract readers on the Journal's platforms as well as on search and social websites.
You are a close reader of the Journal, deeply engaged with the news of the day and is familiar with the ideas, philosophy and principles of the WSJ Opinion section. You will report to the Editorial Page Editor and will be based in our New York office.
You should include a cover letter and resume.
- Review hundreds of daily submissions to select the most relevant, timely, and well-argued letters for the print and digital editions.
- Refine submissions for clarity, brevity, and grammar while preserving the author's original intent and "voice."
- Solicit letters in response to news coverage to encourage informed debate and reader engagement.
- Write accurate, engaging headlines optimized for print, search, social, and digital platforms.
- Pitch content ideas and occasionally contribute bylined articles.
- Participate in editorial board meetings and collaborate with Opinion writers and editors.
- At least 7 years editing experience, preferably covering political, economic or cultural content.
- It is essential that candidates be familiar with the ideas, philosophy and principles for which The Wall Street Journal's editorial page stands.
- Proficiency in writing, copy-editing and proofreading.
- Exceptional editing skills and sound editorial judgement.
- Familiarity with audience insights, newsroom analytics and digital engagement strategies.
- The ability to work efficiently under deadlines.
- Flexibility to work evenings or weekends on occasion as news developments require.

Pay Range: $110,000 - $140,000
