About the Role, Mission or Department Overview
The Weekend Editor plays a central role in shaping the Metro desk's 24/7 report, driving coverage of the biggest storylines through the weekend. By working closely with both the News desk and Metro leadership, this editor ensures that the desk is running on all cylinders, from big breaking news to enterprise and feature stories. Experience managing reporters is essential, as is a demonstrated ability to make crucial news judgements under pressure.
This role is decisive in breaking news situations, and you should be comfortable both working independently and collaboratively in service of the report. You are also comfortable going deep into copy, being the last set of eyes on a story before publication and proficient in all aspects of digital production. You will work with the desk head and other assigning editors, and guide your reporters through ambitious enterprise along with emergent news.
This is an in‑office position, based in New York City and includes regular attendance in the office four days each week. There may be some flexibility to work remotely per your departmental guidance.
- Run the Metro desk over the weekend, assign stories to reporters and correspondents, and to other beat and regional reporters on an ad‑hoc basis as news in their purviews arises.
- Lead and support the weekend operation, in partnership with the Metro Editor.
- Manage fellows or reporters and help them deliver revealing stories that show beat authority and resonate in the area and beyond.
- During the week, work closely with the news team, helping to run coverage on breaking news and assigning reporters on enterprise and features.
- Stay current on new story formats and digital innovations in the newsroom.
- 7+ years' experience at a journalism or media company or other relevant organization.
- Experience stepping in at all stages of the editing process, from a story’s conception to first editing through its publication.
- Writing skills that demonstrate mastery of journalistic style and standards, including ethical and superb news judgement.
- Experience working in high‑pressure, deadline‑driven newsrooms -- including coverage, workflow, as a reporter or editor (depends on role).
- Strong organizational and communication skills.
- A willingness to be nimble and flexible in anticipating potential problems, addressing unexpected issues and finding solutions.
- A willingness to collaborate and the ability to partner with colleagues across The New York Times newsroom.
- A strong understanding of Times style and standards.
- A willingness to be flexible as the newsroom’s needs evolve.
