Position Overview

The American Museum of Natural History is one of the world’s preeminent scientific and cultural institutions, and has as its mission to discover, interpret, and disseminate information about human cultures, the natural world, and the universe through a wide-ranging program of scientific research, education, and exhibition.

Position Summary

The Advancement department is seeking a full‑time Coordinator to support the production of a variety of fundraising and stewardship materials. Collaborating closely with the rest of the Donor Relations team and colleagues within Advancement and across the Museum, the Coordinator gathers and synthesizes content and writes stewardship reports, funding proposals, acknowledgment letters, and other Advancement‑related materials and special projects as needed.

Job Responsibilities
  • Write original, engaging, and compelling copy for:
    • Principal, individual giving, and corporate stewardship reports;
    • Proposals for the principal and individual giving teams;
    • Templated and custom acknowledgment letters used for principal, individual, corporate, and other gifts;
    • Other Advancement-related communications, as needed.
  • Outreach and Content Synthesis:
    • Gather relevant information from colleagues across the Museum to inform the preparation of written Advancement and Corporate Relations materials.
    • Proactively identify and ask questions needed to address gaps or inaccuracies and produce a clear, comprehensive, and accurate written product.
    • Foster cross‑departmental relationships, as well as thoughtfully prepare and refine outreach to colleagues.
  • Project Support:
    • Support the work of the Donor Relations team—assist with research to inform reports or proposals, prepare enclosures for reports or proposals, provide proofreading and copyediting support, and assist with other special projects as needed.
  • Occasionally staff off‑hours onsite events.
Minimum Qualifications
  • Bachelor’s degree in Anthropology, History, English, liberal arts, or another relevant field.
  • Two years of professional experience.
  • Excellent writing, editing, and proofreading skills, including the ability to shift writing style to fit purpose, audience, voice, and tone.
  • Ability to describe complex information using clear, compelling, and original language, and present concise rationales for philanthropy.
  • Ability to critically examine information and ask probing questions.
  • Excellent organizational and time management skills, including the ability to meet deadlines, handle multiple priorities, take initiative, and shift focus quickly in a fast‑paced and high‑volume environment.
  • Ability to interpret, incorporate, and adapt to feedback.
  • Attention to detail and nuance.
  • Ability to work independently and as part of a team; flexible and adaptable.
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office.
Preferred Qualifications
  • Experience with Raiser’s Edge NXT or another similar database.
Physical Demands
  • Must be able to remain in a stationary position (sitting or standing) for prolonged periods.
  • Must be able to move about the Museum campus.
