Summer Directing Class | June 1—August 4 | Very limited space open

The Art and the Audition with Karen Kohlhaas, New York, NY, US.

This is a highly-structured, 50+ hour class in directing designed to be comprehensive and creatively stimulating. It is the class's 20th year. The class is for theater and film artists (dancers & choreographers too) who want to learn to direct or deepen their foundation and skill sets.

There is only 1 Full Director spot available, and a few Active Auditor spots.

The class meets most Monday and Tuesday evenings from June 1 to August 4, 2026. There are 3 weeks off for holidays and rehearsal time. Full directors hold auditions Thursday‑Saturday June 11‑13.

• Pre‑production and research
• Through line script analysis and table work
• Developing a specific and inspiring directorial vision
• Auditions and casting
• Staging & blocking: use of composition, structure, and suspense to create dynamic storytelling
• Collaboration with actors: rehearsal techniques for diverse backgrounds
• Leadership, time management, and troubleshooting

Lecture, discussion, and guest classes on working with playwrights, designers, casting directors, artistic directors, producers, stage managers, directing careers, previews, openings, run, and building one’s vision.

The class meets online. Directors have a hybrid option to cast locally and rehearse present in person if desired. Directors can also choose to rehearse and present completely online.

Full Director: $725

Active Auditor: $375
