Director, Visual Innovator, and Founder / Chief Creative at The GarageAbout Us
The Garage is a creative studio and innovation lab in Brooklyn, pushing the limits of filmmaking, brand storytelling, and immersive experiences. Our work combines robotics, motion control, Unreal Engine virtual production, practical effects, and a great deal of curiosity. We partner with some of the world’s biggest brands to make never-before-seen ideas real — and we’re looking for a like-minded technologist to help us invent what’s next.
The Role
We’re searching for a Creative Technologist – Virtual Production & Experiential to join our full-time team. This is not a narrow, single-tool role — you’ll be working across LED volume systems, real-time Unreal rendering, media servers, networking, lighting protocols, motion control robotics, custom hardware, and interactive control systems. You’ll prototype new workflows, push the limits of real-time graphics and video playback, and help create seamless connections between physical production, virtual production, and live experiences.
We’re looking for someone who not only thrives at the intersection of creative vision and technical precision but also wants to helpbuild out a creative technology team over time. You’ll curate a mix of freelance and full-time go-to collaborators, matching the most intelligent and talented people with the right projects. You’ll work closely with production teams — including Executive Producers and Line Producers — to align schedules, timelines, and budgets, anticipate potential challenges, and solve them before they impact a shoot.
This is a highly collaborative role where you’ll work side by side with a fantastic group of other full-time creatives. For the right candidate, this can be a senior leadership position; for others, it’s an opportunity to grow into that level of responsibility as you develop your skills and experience.
What You’ll Do
- Operate and optimize Unreal Engine virtual production setups
- Configure and run programs like Assimilate LiveFX, Touch Designer, and other media server tools
- Manage LED wall hardware systems and Brompton LED processors
- Set up and maintain high-frame-rate video playback and synchronization systems
- Integrate mocap and motion tracking systems into VP workflows
- Manage advanced Windows and network systems, including master clock and sync controls
- Build custom control tools using Arduino, Raspberry Pi, OSC, and DMX/SACN protocols
- Design and maintain high-speed storage and RAID systems for media workflows
- Prototype new creative technology pipelines for film, VFX, and live experiential events
- Document experiments, workflows, and system configurations for repeatability
- Oversee the integration and implementation of AI tools into our workflows and pipelines to improve efficiency, creativity, and output quality
- Build and manage a network of top-tier creative technology collaborators, balancing freelance specialists and full-time team members based on project needs
- Work closely with production leadership (Executive Producers, Line Producers) to align on schedules, budgets, and timelines
- Anticipate and troubleshoot potential technical or logistical challenges ahead of shoots, ensuring smooth execution on set
- Act as a bridge between technical innovation and creative goals, making sure both sides are supported and aligned
What We’re Looking For
- Hands-on experience with Unreal Engine for virtual production
- Strong knowledge of LED volume hardware, media servers, and video playback systems
- Familiarity with Brompton processors, LiveFX, and Touch Designer
- Stand media and computer hardware understanding and ability to configure a system from scratch
- Knowledge of motion tracking and camera tracking systems
- Solid Windows and networking fundamentals, including precision sync systems
- Experience with DMX, sACN, OSC, and interactive show control
- Comfort with hardware tinkering:
Arduino, Raspberry Pi, custom interfaces - Film production and/or live event experience — you understand creative priorities…
