NEW INC is an interdisciplinary program of the New Museum that brings together 100 creative practitioners and entrepreneurs annually from a wide variety of fields across art, design, and technology, promoting an environment of collaboration. The initiative is considered a global model for a cultural incubator, and colleagues and alumni have hailed it as groundbreaking, transformative, and socially impactful. Critical to the success of NEW INC is its commitment to diversity, equity, and inclusion in both its member recruitment and program methodologies.

In March 2026, NEW INC moves into its own dedicated space within an expanded New Museum, designed by OMA / Shohei Shigematsu and Rem Koolhaas. This new home is located on the 5 th floor of the new building and has space for a media lab, a fabrication studio, coworking space, a private balcony space, and spaces for private meetings.

Position Description

NEW INC is seeking a full-time Media and Fabrication Lab Manager to oversee all studio operations, manage equipment inventory, and facilitate the use of NEW INC’s expanded facilities. This role reports to the NEW INC Deputy Director and works primarily with NEW INC Staff and NEW INC Members to use the facilities described below:

The Media Lab at NEW INC will be a flexible space for NEW INC members and the extended community to produce and refine their projects using a range of digital and physical tools like projection mapping, motion capture and processing, machine learning, photo, audio, and video capture/filming, and data visualization.

The Fabrication Lab at NEW INC is a space for prototyping, modeling, and constructing physical products, artworks, and other objects. This fabrication lab is split into two rooms – a clean room and dirty room equipped with a slop sink. Currently, the fablab includes laser cutters, 3D printers, a large plotter, and various woodworking and prototyping hardware.

Responsibilities
  • Lead all operations and facilitate use of NEW INC Media Lab and NEW INC Fabrication Lab.
  • Manage the use of both labs, including bookings of the space itself and the available equipment.
  • Maintain, manage, and update all equipment inventory in the space.
  • Teach and demonstrate lab capabilities to NEW INC members, staff, and other users of the space.
  • Be available Tuesday – Saturday, 10am-6pm, running the labs and participating in weekly meetings with the NEW INC team.
  • Manage an annual Media Lab and Fabrication Lab facility budget.

This position requires flexibility and occasional scheduling changes to accommodate NEW INC and member projects.

Qualifications
  • 5+ years of relevant professional experience in XR, physical fabrication and prototyping, audio and video production, or expanded digital media.
  • A frequent user of the technologies available in the lab and observer of industry developments and best practices as a professional.
  • Experience guiding and training users of new technologies and tools, such as running a university media lab or XR production space.
  • Ability to manage space bookings, scheduling conflicts, and use of the facilities by different stakeholders.
  • Excited about the NEW INC community and enjoys helping people develop new creative projects.
  • Excellence in troubleshooting technical issues, finding workarounds, and creating systems that prevent future issues.
  • Exceptional organizational skills, with the ability to manage multiple projects while simultaneously interfacing between museum departments and partners, i.e., NEW INC, Museum Facilities, NEW INC space partners, etc.
