The Wall Street Journal is seeking a New York‑based style and fashion columnist on its Features & WSJ. Magazine team to deliver charming, well‑observed columns and coverage on fashion and style moments in the wider culture. The role covers both men’s and women’s fashion and style, profiling distinctive designers, creative directors, industry CEOs, and producing trend stories four lead features that stay ahead of the curve.
While knowledge of the fashion and style industry is key, experience beyond fashion is acceptable – we want a distinctive, highly engaging voice that can interpret visual ideas across platforms for a national news‑oriented audience. Bi‑annual travel to fashion shows and events is expected.
You Will- Report, write and fact‑check an average one column per week about a trend, person, news event or conversation in the style and fashion world.
- Develop highly shareable, witty, ambitious story ideas with clear news value and elegant execution.
- Leverage a deep understanding of key power players and maintain a roster of sources and contacts to help generate story ideas, identify trends, and secure exclusive access.
- Modulate between well‑reported feature stories and whimsical, amusing essays or interviews, embodying the Features and WSJ. Magazine mission to inform and entertain.
- Collaborate egolessly with Features editors and style and culture reporters, including those covering the luxury industry in Paris and London bureaus.
- Uncover unique angles and develop them into engaging reads, amplifying traditional profiles, trends or event stories with humanizing detail and shareable, well‑crafted narrative that show potential for long‑form features or weekend cover stories.
- Incorporate audience data and metrics with great taste and imaginative ideas.
- Ensure the voice, tone and standards of The Wall Street Journal are consistently met; uphold newsroom ethics and conduct policies.
- Unputdownable clips and exceptional writing and reporting skills.
- At least 5 years’ experience covering a relevant beat, including essays or columns, feature stories, and well‑developed enterprise or long‑form pieces.
- A proven history of finding unexpected takes on the style and fashion world or broader creative‑culture worlds, and an eye for visually intriguing stories that appeal to a general audience.
- Strong contacts and a dogged, indefatigable sense of how to make stories happen.
- A sense of humor and experience finding clever, intelligent angles in widely covered stories.
- A meticulous approach to fact‑checking, avoiding errors and securing high‑profile, consequential stories with critical accuracy.
- A sharp sense of how to connect with digital audiences.
- Visual thinking and an interest in how stories appear across platforms.
- A collaborative, team‑player attitude, upbeat outlook and entrepreneurial spirit as coverage needs evolve.
You will report to the Bureau Chief of Fashion & Lifestyle within the Features team. This is a full‑time position based in our New York, NY office.

Base Pay Range: $120,000 – $160,000.
