Job Description & How to Apply Below
Position: Editorial Director, On With Kara Swisher
Location: New York

The Vox Media Podcast Network is hiring an Editorial Director for its award‑winning show On with Kara Swisher. The podcast reaches a large, influential audience and regularly welcomes headline‑makers across politics (Kamala Harris, Bernie Sanders, Pete Buttegieg), tech (Sam Altman, Geoffrey Hinton, Bill Gates), and culture (Margaret Atwood, Laverne Cox, Ronny Chieng).

The Editorial Director leads the On With Kara Swisher staff and daily production: overseeing workflow, assignment management, and editorial planning/initiatives. The Editorial Director also works closely with the host and the podcast network's Exec. Producer to implement special projects and brand expansion across platforms. This role is the link between the show's episode content and its established vision and strategy—responsible for scheduling editorial reviews, strengthening programming, and implementing plans for ongoing improvement and audience growth.

The Editorial Director is also the steward of the team's culture, facilitating creative collaboration and pathways to professional growth for team members while ensuring the highest standards for journalism and production.

WHAT YOU’LL DO
  • Lead the day-to-day editorial and production operations of On With Kara Swisher, overseeing workflow, assignments, and production timelines.
  • Drive editorial planning and programming strategy, ensuring each episode aligns with the show's vision, goals, and audience growth objectives.
  • Manage the team's editorial calendar, including scheduling, vacation planning, and backfill coverage.
  • Run pitch and prep meetings, guiding story development and editorial decision‑making.
  • Provide editorial oversight for individual twice‑weekly episodes, including prep doc review and final editorial content review.
  • Partner with the host and Executive Producer to develop and execute special projects and expand the brand across platforms.
  • Oversee editorial reviews and implement initiatives that strengthen programming quality and performance.
  • Monitor audience trends and feedback, translating insights into actionable improvements for content and growth.
  • Supervise, mentor, and support team members, fostering professional development and high performance.
  • Cultivate a collaborative, creative, and inclusive team culture while upholding the highest standards of journalism and audio production.
WHAT YOU’LL BRING
  • 7+ years of experience in podcast production, audio journalism, or editorial news leadership, with a demonstrated track record managing high‑output, fast‑paced editorial operations.
  • Proven experience leading and developing editorial teams, including direct management of producers and editors.
  • Strong news judgment and deep familiarity with the political, tech, and culture landscapes that define On with Kara Swisher's editorial identity.
  • Experience producing long‑form interview‑driven content with high‑profile guests, and a clear point of view on what makes those conversations resonate.
  • Ability to own an editorial calendar end‑to‑end: planning, scheduling, story/angle development, and execution across a consistent publishing cadence that remains responsive to pertinent breaking news.
  • Experience working closely with a prominent host or talent, translating their editorial instincts into operational systems and team‑wide standards.
  • Comfort working across functions: coordinating with audio engineers, video teams, social, and platform partners to support multi‑platform editorial and brand initiatives.
  • Fluency in audio production software (Pro Tools or equivalent) and/or video editing software (Adobe Premiere or equivalent).
  • A sharp, diplomatic communicator who can give clear editorial feedback and hold standards without losing the room.
  • Genuine investment in team culture: someone who creates pathways for growth and takes the mentorship side of management seriously.
  • Familiarity with audience analytics and a habit of using data to inform programming decisions.
