GQ Visuals Editor Overview

The Visuals Editor of GQ is responsible for all aspects of photo shoot production and picture research across GQ’s print and digital platforms. A broad knowledge of industry teams and connections is a must, i.e. strong relationships with agencies, photographers, stylists, studios, etc.

This position reports to the Visuals Director and is based in New York City.

Primary Responsibilities
  • Work closely with editors to understand visual/photo needs for assigned projects.
  • Pitch cross‑platform ideas that ladder up to established brand identity and visual strategy.
  • Own all research, image selection, credits, and CMS upload/publication across platforms.
  • Support all aspects of cross‑platform photo shoot production, ensuring the creative concept is upheld from brief to final delivery, including:
    • Curating photographer lists and creating visual mood boards that align with GQ’s point of view
    • Commissioning teams and liaising with agents, photographers, studios, stylists, hair/makeup, catering, and other vendors throughout the project
    • Creating and maintaining timelines, schedules, budgets, shot‑lists, call‑sheets, production credits and other production documents – proactively sharing and communicating this information to all key stakeholders throughout the project
    • Attending and managing on‑set production, as needed
    • Partnering with colleagues in CNE to ensure appropriate synergy across photo and video production
    • Coordinating the post‑production process for lo‑res and hi‑res photo selection and final delivery
    • Liaise with the social media team to ensure images are optimized, properly formatted, and visually consistent across all social and digital platforms
  • Collaborate with other visuals department team members to support larger scale shoot productions as needed.
  • Contribute to tracking and maintaining project budgets within the photo budget across platforms, exercising sound judgment in when to elevate the project to the Visuals Director, Creative Director, and/or Operations and Finance partners.
  • Secure contracts, photo fees, and usage rights for all images (produced and researched), in partnership with CN legal and business affairs teams.
  • Ensure all invoices are tracked and processed in a timely manner and that jobs are wrapped accurately and efficiently.
  • Regularly review portfolios, build and maintain relationships with agencies and photographers.
Requirements
  • 3‑5+ years work experience in photo/visual production or related field, with knowledge of various image libraries, stock agencies, photographers, stylists, hair and makeup artists and groomers, etc.
  • Strong editorial judgment with demonstrated experience contributing to visual stories across platforms.
  • A highly motivated self‑starter with proven ability to manage multiple projects, priorities, and deadlines in a fast‑paced, matrixed environment.
  • A meticulous eye for detail and impeccable organizational skills.
  • Strong communication and collaboration skills.
  • A work‑style that balances entrepreneurial spirit with operational rigor.
  • Passion for fashion, entertainment, culture and photography.
  • Fluency in photo equipment and lighting is recommended. Added plus if candidate has skills to shoot product still life in studio, as well as photograph on location in various environments.
