Job Title:
Associate/Senior Editor for BMC Sports Science, Medicine and Rehabilitation and BMC Rheumatology.
Location:

This is a hybrid role based in New York. You will contribute to the success of the BMC Series by editorial handling of content in BMC Sports Science, Medicine and Rehabilitation and BMC Rheumatology and drive content development for these journals. You will build relationships with the external Editorial Board and internal teams responsible for journal editorial office support.
Responsibilities- Develop a journal development strategy for BMC Sports Science, Medicine and Rehabilitation and BMC Rheumatology using data-driven planning aligned with journal and broader BMC objectives.
- Collaborate with colleagues across the Journals Group to support subject-specific publishing strategies and initiatives.
- Identify, commission, and develop reviews, collections, and supplements; build partnerships with the scientific community through effective communication and relationship management.
- Oversee editorial handling of manuscripts, applying rigorous evaluation to publish scientifically rigorous, novel, and impactful content.
- Make editorial decisions and provide guidance to Editorial Board Members while maintaining high editorial standards.
- Investigate and resolve publishing and research integrity cases, navigating ethical and procedural challenges.
- Work with internal teams to resolve editorial issues efficiently and maintain author satisfaction through collaboration and operational excellence.
- Contribute to editorial policy development using critical judgment and evidence-based thinking.
- Build and maintain productive relationships with Editorial Board Members, reviewers, and authors; lead discussions with Senior Board Members on strategy and policy updates.
- Support recruitment, onboarding, training, and ongoing engagement of Editorial Board Members to ensure operational consistency and excellence.
- Organize and lead Editorial Board meetings and strategic discussions with strong communication and organizational skills.
- Ensure Editorial Board Members understand and adhere to journal policies, editorial standards, and best practices.
- Partner with marketing teams to increase journal visibility and community engagement through strategic content promotion and outreach.
- Develop website content, blogs, and social media initiatives to enhance journal visibility and showcase BMC values.
- Represent the journals at conferences and networking events, communicating journal objectives and building relationships within the scientific community.
- Contribute to a supportive and high-performing editorial culture by sharing expertise and supporting colleagues during periods of high workload.
Skills & Qualifications
- Educated to PhD or MD level (or equivalent) in rehabilitation, sports science, rheumatology, or related discipline.
- Previous substantial editorial experience in scientific publishing for consideration at the Senior Editor level.
- Ability to critically evaluate scientific content and assess manuscripts for rigor, novelty, relevance, and impact.
- Strong decision-making skills with the ability to make balanced, objective, evidence-based editorial decisions.
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills with a customer-focused approach.
- Proven ability to build productive relationships with diverse stakeholders and strong interpersonal awareness.
- Collaborative mindset with experience working across teams and functions.
- Excellent organizational, prioritization, and project management skills with a focus on operational excellence.
- Resilience with the ability to manage competing priorities, navigate ambiguity, and adapt to changing business needs.
- Ability to balance short-term deadlines with long-term strategic goals.
- Competitive salary:
Associate Editor up to $80,000;
