The New York Times International desk is looking for a Senior Producer based in New York to grow a video team and develop new approaches to our international reporting in video. Your team will work with a growing group of foreign correspondents who report in video as well as text.
The goal is to help readers understand the world through powerful video stories, reaching our core audience as well as new viewers who increasingly consume journalism in video. We will experiment with a mix of short-form, immersive vertical video that can bring readers with us on the ground.
You will lead a team of video journalists who will shape this work with correspondents in the field.
You are a trusted editorial leader who is also a creative force excited about experimenting with new formats, and who is deeply immersed in the digital video world. You have experience making high-level editorial decisions that lift critical lines of coverage, including under deadline pressure. You are a strong manager of creative teams, an effective collaborator, and a fluid communicator and writer.
You should be able to manage the deployment of teams in the field, including in security-sensitive areas. You should be comfortable routinely collaborating with multiple teams, including the newsroom Video department.
This position is based in New York and includes regular attendance in the office four days each week.
Responsibilities- Lead coverage of a group of hybrid video correspondents, in close partnership with regional editors and colleagues in Video.
- Devise new approaches to digital video storytelling both on and off platform.
- Manage a group of video journalists working with correspondents in the field.
- Drive story development and oversee scripting and editing.
- Assign, vet and drive video story pitches and publication.
- Lift our coverage of major storylines by working across the team to create a playbook for how to cover a region or beat in video.
- Demonstrate support and understanding of our value of journalistic independence and a strong commitment to our mission to seek the truth and help people understand the world.
- The role reports to the Deputy International Editor for visuals.
- 8+ years experience producing news video journalism for digital or broadcast news.
- Excellent writing, editing and communication skills.
- Broad knowledge of current events and news.
- Strong organizational skills, with the ability to supervise other video journalists and schedules, direct video correspondents.
- Proven track record in managing video journalists.
- Demonstrated deep command of a variety of video sources, including wire services, UGC, archival footage, motion graphics, and original footage, as well as the journalistic standards and copyright issues involved in their reproduction.
- Proven hands‑on experience in the trenches of production, including editing, shooting and field production.
- Experience covering international news.
- Deep curiosity about video habits and users and platforms.
- Able to meet and make quick decisions under deadlines and to adapt to change in a daily, unpredictable news environment.
- A record of deploying teams of journalists in challenging field assignments.
- High creative standards and a drive to push work to its best possible form.
The annual base pay range for this role is between:
$145,000 — $170,000 USD
