About the Role

The Science desk of The New York Times seeks a creative and energetic reporter to cover biotech. The scope includes breaking news, think pieces, and cutting‑edge features on early‑stage pharmaceuticals, promising medical devices, vaccine development, reproductive technology, and emerging fields such as brain‑computer interfaces. The role is in‑office, requiring regular attendance in a Times bureau four days a week; candidates may be based in New York or a U.S. biotech hub such as San Francisco or Boston, with potential remote flexibility per departmental guidance.

Responsibilities
  • Cover breaking news and produce larger think pieces and cutting‑edge features.
  • Write clear, concise, and engaging news stories that adhere to journalistic style guidelines.
  • Use established and develop additional sources to land exclusive stories for this beat.
  • Monitor news and deliver a steady stream of story ideas that help explain the beat.
  • Collaborate with colleagues across the newsroom.
  • Demonstrate support for the company’s commitment to journalistic independence and the mission to seek truth.
  • Report to a Science editor.
Basic Qualifications
  • 5+ years of science journalism experience.
  • Strong reporting and writing skills that demonstrate mastery of journalistic style, ethical standards, and superb news judgment.
Preferred Qualifications
  • Experience working as a reporter in high‑pressure, deadline‑driven newsrooms.
  • Strong understanding of Times style and standards.
  • Willingness to be flexible as newsroom needs evolve.

Pay and Benefits

Annual base pay range: $—$125,000 USD. Eligible for variable pay (e.g., annual bonus, restricted stock), and benefits including medical, dental, vision, Flexible Spending Accounts, a company‑matching 401(k) plan, paid vacation, paid sick days, paid parental leave, tuition reimbursement, and professional development programs.
