GENERAL STATEMENT OF RESPONSIBILITES & DUTIES:

The Carol

B. Grossman Curatorial Scholar is a two-year position in the Department of European Paintings dedicated to the development of curatorial practice in a museum. Under the guidance and mentorship of the European Paintings curatorial team, you will be trained in duties related to installations and exhibitions featuring the Department’s permanent collection of nineteenth-century European paintings. Collaborating closely with the curatorial team, you will be responsible for research, writing, and administrative projects that underpin the presentation of our collection to the public.

PRIMARY RESPONSIBILIES & DUTIES:

Conduct research into works in The Met’s collection and related works at other institutions, in preparation for upcoming installations and exhibitions, including information on bibliography, exhibition history, and provenance

Assist with the organization of installations and exhibitions that highlight the permanent collection, including maintaining object checklists and files; preparing applications for indemnity and immunity from seizure; drafting interpretative and promotional material (gallery labels, images/captions, digital content, and other assets); participate in meetings with conservators, designers, the collections care team, and other Museum departments

In coordination with the Department collections team, maintain updated cataloguing and loan records in TMSDraft discursive entries for the Museum’s website on permanent collection works, as appropriate

Other duties as assigned

EDUCATION & EXPERIENCE:

MA in art history required, with an emphasis in European Painting over the long nineteenth-century (1789–1914); 0 – 3 years Museum related experience

Excellent written, speaking and editorial skills

Strong organizational skills, with attention to detail and dedication to scholarly precision

Excellent computer skills, with proficiency in Microsoft Office, including PowerPoint and Teams, and Adobe Acrobat Pro/Photoshop; experience with TMS (The Museum System) database and bibliographic software (e.g., Zotero) preferred

Strong reading and writing in German, preferred COMPENSATION RATE:
