About the Organization Children of Promise, NYC's (CPNYC) reimagines a just society that values the purpose of every child impacted by mass incarceration and removes barriers to create opportunities for children to thrive and achieve their full potential. CPNYC's mission is to support and advocate for the children of incarcerated parents while speaking out against root causes that affect the communities we serve, including systemic racism, poverty, and bias in our nation's criminal justice system.

CPNYC has successfully developed an innovative model, the only one of its kind in New York City, which co-locates a licensed mental health clinic and children's centers in Bedford Stuyvesant, Brooklyn, and the South Bronx. CPNYC provides an array of youth development programming and services tailored to each child's individual strengths and challenges and fosters a unique uplifting environment to foster hope and resilience.

Position Overview:

Dance Activity Specialists organize, lead, and promote interest in dance activities. Instructors utilize and adapt the New York State Arts Learning Standards in order to create an engaging and rewarding activity that encourages participation in CPNYC programs. Dance Specialists organize, lead, and promote interest in activities such as traditional jazz, African dance, folk dance, hip-hop and funk dance, Afro dance, ballet, lyrical, contemporary dance, flamenco, modern dance, tap dance, Latin dance, ballroom dance, improvisational dance, step, freestyle, and break/house dance.

Essential Job Functions Establish and enforce rules for behavior and procedures for maintaining order among the students for whom they are responsible

Organize, lead, and promote interest in dance activities

Organize performance groups and direct their rehearsals

Establish clear objectives for all lessons, units, and projects, and communicate those objectives to students

Ascertain and interpret group interests, evaluate equipment and facilities, and adapt activities to meet the students’ needs

Explain principles, techniques, and safety procedures to participants in the activities, and demonstrate use of materials and equipment

Greet new arrivals to activities, introducing them to other students, explaining the rules, and encouraging participation

Evaluate activities to determine whether they are producing desired results

Adapt teaching methods and instructional materials to meet students' varying needs and interests

Support progressive development of student skills leading to a final project

Provide support during the academic and homework hour Promote positive character development in all youth

Required Knowledge, Skill and Experience Must have experience successfully teaching and instructing youth in dance

Must be responsible, reliable, and punctual

Excellent communication and interpersonal skills required

Qualifications

Associate Degree required

Minimum of two (2) years of work-related skill, knowledge, or experience is required

Must have a passion for CPNYC's mission and demonstrated interest in the field of education and youth development

Certifications and credentials in the respective skill-based activity highly preferred

Candidates who are qualified to lead instruction in more than one activity preferred
