A leading national news organization is seeking an experienced
Senior Political Reporter
to join its fast-paced digital newsroom. This is a hands‑on reporting position for an accomplished journalist with strong political news judgment, established reporting skills, and an impressive portfolio of published bylines.
The successful candidate will be deeply immersed in the daily political news cycle and able to break news, develop original reporting, cultivate sources, and produce compelling stories for a large national audience.
This is not a content writing, communications, public relations, or opinion‑writing position.
Responsibilities- Report and write timely, authoritative stories covering national politics, government, elections, public policy, and breaking news.
- Develop original reporting and exclusive stories through established sources, interviews, public records, and independent research.
- Cover breaking developments quickly and accurately while meeting demanding digital deadlines.
- Build and maintain relationships with political, government, campaign, and policy sources.
- Identify important stories and angles that distinguish the organization’s coverage.
- Monitor political developments, government activity, hearings, campaigns, elected officials, and emerging national narratives.
- Conduct interviews and independently verify facts and source information.
- Work closely with editors on story development, headlines, follow-up reporting, and continuing coverage.
- Update developing stories throughout the news cycle.
- Produce polished, accurate copy that meets professional editorial and AP-style standards.
- A minimum of five years of professional news-reporting experience is required.
- Significant experience covering politics, government, elections, public policy, or national affairs.
- A strong portfolio of directly attributable reporting bylines from recognized news organizations.
- Demonstrated ability to develop sources and produce original reporting.
- Excellent political news judgment and a thorough understanding of the national news cycle.
- Proven ability to report breaking news accurately under tight deadlines.
- Exceptional writing, interviewing, fact-checking, and research skills.
- Experience working in a high-volume digital newsroom.
- Ability to work independently while collaborating closely with editors and other reporters.
- Bachelor’s degree in journalism, political science, communications, or a related discipline is preferred.
This position may be based in
Washington, D.C. or New York City
and follows a hybrid work schedule. The anticipated base salary is
up to $125,000
, depending on experience and qualifications.
Applicants must have at least five years of professional reporting experience and a substantial portfolio of published political or national news bylines. Candidates whose backgrounds are primarily in marketing, public relations, corporate communications, social media, academic writing, or general content creation will not be considered.
