The role

We're opening a new fragrance workshop space at the Element Brooklyn Gallery of Scent in the South Street Seaport and we're looking for someone who knows fragrance to run it. Guests build a scent from a wall of 80 notes and leave with a perfume or room spray.

This is our first time running a fragrance workshop, and we have a lot of ideas but are looking for someone who will also help contribute to building our workshop inventory and processes. You'll finalize the note wall, set the dilutions, write the session, and train the rest of the team to run it when you're not there.

This is a part-time role, around 4 hours per day covering afternoon and weekend workshop blocks, starting as soon as possible.
What you'll do
  • Lead fragrance-making workshops for groups of up to twelve, guiding guests from first sniff to finished bottle
  • Teach top, heart, and base structure well enough that a first-timer walks out with something wearable
  • Rescue blends that aren't working — knowing what to add, and when to tell someone to stop
  • Blend and bottle finished fragrances, label them, and log every formula in our system
  • Help finalize the note wall and the dilution levels for each material
  • Write the session structure and training materials and teach other staff to run it
  • Keep the wall in order — bottles topped up, stock flagged before it runs out
  • Host private groups, corporate bookings, and holiday events
What we're looking for
  • Real fragrance knowledge — formulation or blending work, perfume retail where you learned the notes, formal coursework, lab or production experience, or a serious personal practice with your own materials (you don't need to have taught workshops before)
  • A working knowledge of notes and families: what ingredients smell like, how they behave over time, and what they do to each other in a blend
  • Comfort holding a room. You'll be guiding groups for 60 minutes at a stretch and you should like being in front of people
  • Precision — small differences in a blend matter, and so does recording someone's formula correctly
  • Afternoon and weekend availability, including both weekend days most weeks
  • Based in NYC with easy access to the Seaport
Compensation

$45 per hour, roughly 20 hours per week depending on the workshop schedule.
