Are you passionate about creating books that inspire, inform, and delight readers? Do you have a sharp eye for market opportunities, emerging trends, and standout author talent? Quarto is seeking an experienced Acquiring Editor to help shape the future of our illustrated nonfiction publishing program across our Rock Point, Wellfleet Press, and Epic Ink imprints.

In this role, you will identify, acquire, and develop commercially successful books across categories including cooking, lifestyle, wellness, creativity, nature, culture, and gift publishing. You'll work closely with authors, agents, freelancers, and internal teams to bring compelling concepts to life, helping build a dynamic publishing list that resonates with today's readers and delivers strong business results.

This is an exciting opportunity for an entrepreneurial editor who loves discovering new ideas, building relationships, and transforming great concepts into successful books.

Key Results Areas Acquire and Develop New Publishing Projects
  • Identify, acquire, and develop 15-20 commercially viable illustrated nonfiction titles annually.
  • Scout emerging trends, audience interests, and market opportunities to build a distinctive and successful publishing list.
  • Develop relationships with authors, agents, experts, brands, and content creators.
  • Evaluate book proposals and unsolicited submissions for editorial quality, market positioning, and commercial potential.
  • Create and present acquisition proposals, including project budgets and profit-and-loss analyses.
  • Shape book concepts, positioning, and content in collaboration with authors and internal stakeholders.
  • Manage freelance editors and contributors throughout the editorial process.
Lead Editorial Development
  • Guide projects from concept through completed manuscript delivery.
  • Provide substantive editorial feedback and manuscript development as needed.
  • Conduct research and fact-checking to support high-quality publishing standards.
  • Secure permissions and rights, working directly with authors and rights holders.
  • Prepare and deliver materials for design and production teams according to established schedules.
Collaborate Across the Business
  • Partner closely with sales, marketing, and publicity teams to ensure each title has a clear audience and compelling market position.
  • Contribute to strategic publishing discussions and seasonal planning.
  • Collaborate with design, production, and other departments to ensure projects stay on schedule and within budget.
  • Support efforts to maximize visibility and commercial success for acquired titles.
Required Qualifications
  • 5+ years of experience in publishing acquisitions.
  • Bachelor's degree or equivalent combination of education and experience.
  • Strong knowledge of one or more of the following publishing categories: cooking, lifestyle, wellness, creativity, nature, culture, or gift publishing.
  • Outstanding editorial judgment and commercial awareness.
  • Excellent written, verbal, and interpersonal communication skills.
  • Strong organizational skills with exceptional attention to detail.
  • Ability to successfully manage multiple projects, deadlines, and budgets simultaneously.
  • Proficiency with Microsoft Office applications.
Preferred Qualifications
  • Proven experience developing commercially successful publishing programs or titles.
  • Strong understanding of consumer trends and audience behavior.
  • Familiarity with competitive title analysis and publishing market research.
  • Knowledge of digital media, creator platforms, newsletters, podcasts, and other emerging channels for identifying authors and market opportunities.
  • Existing network of authors, literary agents, experts, influencers, and freelance editorial talent.
