About Big Apple Greeter
Big Apple Greeter is a small non‑profit organization that has been welcoming visitors to NYC since 1992 by offering them free four‑hour visits to a neighborhood of their choice with volunteers who know it well.
Mission: enhance the worldwide image of New York City and enrich the New York experience by connecting visitors with knowledgeable and enthusiastic volunteers called Greeters.
ActivitiesVolunteer Greeters take small groups of 1–6 people on informal, unscripted walks through neighborhoods they know and love. As a Greeter, you will:
- Lead visitors through neighborhoods they might not discover on their own.
- Recommend your personal favorites—hidden gems, local shops, restaurants, etc.
- Explain the public transportation system and how to navigate NYC.
- Answer questions and help visitors feel at home in our fast‑paced city.
- A genuine love for meeting people from diverse cultures and backgrounds.
- An upbeat, "New York proud" attitude.
- Comfortable using public transportation.
- Foreign language skills a big plus.
Minimum 12 greets per year; 2–4 hours per greet, plus travel time. You set your own schedule—greets happen 365 days a year.
BenefitsThere is a thrill in making new friends from around the world. You’ll "show off" your city, practice language skills, and play a vital role in keeping New York friendly and accessible.
