Position: DENTAL OFFICE ASSISTANT - PS 57 Weldon Johnson School Based Health Center
Location: New York

Overview

Kick-start a smile‑making career as a Dental Office Assistant at the Institute for Family Health—where teamwork, purpose, and top‑tier 1199 union benefits come together. In this hands‑on role, you’ll support dentists during clinical procedures and help create a smooth, welcoming experience for every patient. You will prepare exam rooms and instruments, keep charts accurate and up to date, and help keep the practice running at its best.

Responsibilities
  • Check in patients and notify providers that patients are present.
  • Maintain the dental laboratory, process instruments, and monitor lab cases (check‑in of lab cases, pouring impressions where indicated, storing cases, sending out lab cases, completing lab log sheets, etc.).
  • Follow weekly and monthly maintenance procedures for all sterilization and radiograph developing equipment.
  • Follow OSHA standards of infection control under CDC guidelines, overseen by the Infection Control Officer.
  • Take and process radiographs as directed by the dentist or hygienist.
  • Record patient appointment data daily, including no‑shows, cancellations, emergencies, and payment sources (Medicaid, self‑pay, etc.).
  • Place treatment plans, periodontal charts, informed consent forms, referral forms, and contracts for complex treatment into the dental subdivision of the comprehensive medical records.
Qualifications
  • High School Diploma or GED required.
  • Minimum of one year experience as a Dental Assistant in a clinical setting preferred; experience in a family practice is a plus.
  • Demonstrated basic computer skills.
  • Demonstrated communication, organizational, and interpersonal skills.
  • Demonstrated competence in 4‑handed dentistry.
  • Demonstrated ability to work independently.
  • Dental Assistant Certification required.
