Project Architect – Transportation
HOK’s New York office is seeking a Project Architect to oversee the issuance and content of deliverables, coordinate disciplines, supervise staff producing documentation, and sign and seal drawings. The role requires a licensed architect and involves managing the technical execution of high‑quality construction documentation for large‑scale transit and infrastructure projects.
Leadership- Advocates for and upholds the design intent of stations, transit facilities, and urban infrastructure, ensuring seamless translation into coordinated, high‑quality construction documentation.
- Ensures the overall design intent established by the Project Designer is incorporated into detailed documentation.
- Monitors the design process from conception through construction administration, ensuring consistency and proper execution.
- Provides technical resolution and coordination for a defined portion of a project.
- Participates in a culture of technical excellence and collaborates with the Specification Writer to develop specifications.
- Checks completed reports, plans, estimates and calculations for accuracy.
- Sets strategy for producing documents and organizes data in the Building Information Model (BIM).
- Configures project team software parameters and manages standards.
- Maintains collaborative professional relationships with the Project Leadership Team.
- Communicates with other disciplines, vendors, and contractors to incorporate all information into project requirements.
- Ensures construction detail documentation conforms to quality assurance, quality control, and best practice standards.
- Supervises preparation of technical drawings by less senior architects or technicians.
- Leads projects as required and mentors junior staff through professional development reviews and “Lessons Learned” sessions.
- Promotes sustainable work practices and prioritizes green workplace initiatives.
- Fosters a commitment to internal and external client service.
- Builds a positive relationship of trust with client leadership.
- Communicates regularly with client representatives to verify design requirements, specifications, progress, and delivery of final presentations.
- Receives project direction from the Principal in Charge and technical direction from the RBU Technical Principal.
- Coordinates shared electronic documentation and files with team members, clients, and consultants.
- Adapts drawings and templates as needed to complete working sets.
- Coordinates approvals or variances with municipal building departments and governing agencies.
- Writes reports and memos to consultants and vendors to issue changes and track resolutions.
- Provides technical support and project communication to the team.
- Attends on‑site visits, field reviews, and project meetings; reviews contractor schedules and shop drawings.
- Assists the Specification Writer with product research, manufacturer consultation, and material selection.
- Uses HOK Standards for specification set‑up, drawing coordination, and research.
- Supports team members in specialized market or discipline areas.
- Participates in meetings to resolve project issues, coordinate with other disciplines, ensure schedule adherence, and address technical concerns.
- Reviews project costs and budgets for schedule compliance.
- Prepares meeting minutes for consultant coordination meetings.
- Prepares 2D and 3D presentation drawings and builds models for client and project team reviews.
- Integrates Integrated Sustainable Design solutions into projects.
- May participate in business development meetings to target specified project, client, or market opportunities.
- Bachelor’s degree in architecture (or equivalent) required; master’s degree preferred.
- Over ten years of design experience.
- Licensed architect with current regional registration required; licensure must be offered in the region.
- NCARB registration preferred.
- LEED accreditation or Green Associate preferred.
- Prior experience on large‑scale transportation or infrastructure projects preferred.
Compensation is based on experience, qualifications, education, and location. The expected range for this position is $110,000–$120,000, with potential discretionary bonus.
