Location: New York

The Architecture Unit in the Capital Division designs, restores, and modernizes existing or new parks structures, ranging from new recreation centers to historic house renovations. This work influences neighborhood growth, public health, and recreation throughout New York City.

Major Responsibilities
  • Under the direction of the Team Leader and Design Director of Architecture, develop designs and bid documents for the preservation, restoration, and adaptive reuse of existing structures.
  • Ensure compliance with New York City Landmarks Law.
  • Produce condition surveys, historic resource assessments, and background research on historic monuments, buildings, structures, and landscapes in New York City Parks.
  • Work closely with project designers, resident engineers, Maintenance & Operations staff, and public/private partnerships to provide technical assistance and advice on conservation products, techniques, preservation design practices, and appropriate maintenance standards for park resources.
  • Develop measured drawings and technical specifications.
  • Provide construction supervision assistance for historic resources and preservation.
  • Coordinate project‑specific agency issues such as permits, filings, and approvals.
  • Manage all phases of project development from scope definition through construction administration to produce complete, sustainable, and technically excellent designs within established schedule and budget.
  • Coordinate with support units and consultants to prioritize workload to ensure schedules are met throughout the process and assistance is provided as needed.
  • Participate in the development of design standards for historic structures, including details and specifications.
Minimum Qualifications
  • Master’s degree in historic preservation, architectural history, art history, architecture, or American history from an accredited institution, plus one year of full‑time satisfactory experience in preservation, restoration, or conservation of historic structures, or related research. (Equivalent graduate study may substitute up to one year of experience on the basis that 30 graduate credits equal one year of experience.)
  • Baccalaureate degree in the same fields plus two years of full‑time satisfactory experience as described above.
  • Education and/or experience equivalent to the above. All candidates must hold a baccalaureate degree from an accredited institution with a major in one of the listed fields and one year of full‑time satisfactory experience.
Preferred Skills
  • Master of Science in Historic Preservation with emphasis on architectural conservation and two years of full‑time experience.
  • Ability to produce measured drawings and technical specifications for historic preservation projects.
  • Project management experience in managing design projects and contracts.
  • Proficiency in Word, Excel, PowerPoint, CAD, GIS, and Adobe Photoshop.
  • Excellent writing skills and the ability to communicate clearly and effectively.
  • Knowledge of historic preservation research practices in New York City and the New York City Landmarks Law.
  • Valid New York State driver’s license.
