Our client is seeking a Technical Designer based in New York City. This role may become permanent for the right candidate and will support all children’s apparel categories.
- Location:
Midtown Manhattan, with four days onsite and one day remote each week. - Pay Rate: $50-$55/hr, based on experience.
- Lead the product review process and provide technical recommendations to ensure products align with the Merchant’s vision.
- Manage periodic activities, including Merchant training and PTS projects.
- Conduct technical product reviews for designated categories, including pre-reviews, fit sessions as needed, entering comments into the Sample Tool, and communicating corrections to vendors.
- Coach vendors on recurring issues and address instances when sample procedures and processes are not followed.
- Track sample status and prepare reporting to ensure products are reviewed in time to meet ship and cancellation dates.
- Collaborate with department leaders on projects to improve technical fit and quality, understand competitor quality, and recommend changes.
- Oversee product fit, quality, and construction throughout the lifecycle, from inspiration and tech pack development through top-of-production sample review.
- Maintain consistent size and fit standards, grade rules, construction standards, quality standards, blocks, and tech pack templates.
- Partner with Merchant and Sourcing teams on product direction and fit intent.
- Develop tech packs with clear garment construction and fit direction for vendors and review vendor submissions.
- Anticipate potential problems and risks and recommend solutions.
- Build strong relationships with Merchants, PTS, the Sample Team, and other key business partners.
- Proactively solve problems and offer a range of solutions.
- Gain alignment and influence decisions within PTS and with Merchant partners.
- Adapt communication based on the audience to ensure clarity.
- Keep the manager informed of important matters and concerns.
- Create and update materials for PTS and Merchant training as directed by the manager.
- Continue developing technical knowledge and keeping skills current.
- Bachelor’s degree in Product Development, Product Management, or Technical Design preferred, or certification with equivalent experience.
- Five or more years of experience in technical design, product development, production management, or an equivalent area.
- Ability to train and mentor as required.
- Experience leading fit sessions with fit models, communicating corrections, and understanding cost implications.
- In-depth knowledge of fit, materials, construction, patterns, and production.
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
