UI/UX Design, Product Designer
Own mission-driven product design for aclu.org and 50+ Affiliate websites as part of the ACLU’s Technology Department, Product & Engineering division. This full-time hybrid role is based in New York, NY with in-office expectations of two (2) days per week or eight (8) days per month
. You’ll help shape engaging digital experiences, strengthen advocacy pathways, and ensure accessibility is built into the product from planning through QA.
Reporting to the Product Design Manager, you will drive end-to-end product design across both the ACLU National website and the broader Affiliate network. Your work will support impact-driven experiences that guide users toward civil rights engagement, create effective engagement funnels, and promote pathways that sustain the ACLU’s mission through digital and on-the-ground actions.
- Fully own and lead the design lifecycle for product initiatives across ACLU National and Affiliate websites.
- Use data such as industry standards, quantitative research, A/B testing, and qualitative research to understand user needs and frictions, evaluate usability, and inform direction and iteration.
- Generate and communicate multiple solution approaches using wireframes and lightweight prototypes.
- Request feedback from Design, Product, and stakeholders, and incorporate learnings into final designs.
- Produce high-fidelity mocks and prototypes for lightweight concepts while also identifying opportunities for future, larger-scale improvements.
- Develop design specifications for Engineering implementation, partnering directly with Engineers to achieve the desired output within the scope and timeframe.
- Lead Design and web accessibility UAT/QA for assigned projects.
- Receive project assignments from the Product Design Manager and provide a design strategy aligned to scope, timeline, and priority.
- Represent Product Design with Product Managers and Engineering Leads by translating requirements and constraints into user-centric experiences tied to user needs and business goals.
- Collaborate on presenting complex ideas to non-technical stakeholders and earn buy-in and support.
- Participate in brainstorms and provide constructive feedback on fellow Product Designers’ work.
- Use a clear rationale to facilitate product and design decisions, tying benefits and risks to user needs and behaviors that support product outcomes.
- Contribute to the evolving Design System with the Product Design team.
- Balance design quality and innovation by determining when to use the existing design system versus when to explore new patterns for broader visibility and adoption.
- Mentor and/or manage Product Design interns as assigned.
- Participate in special projects and other assigned duties.
- Example work showing 5+ years (or equivalent) shipping digital product designs, with your role clearly defined in each project. Applications without relevant example work will not be considered.
- Expert proficiency in digital design tools (ACLU uses Figma
). - Strong foundation in UX/UI standards and best practices, including designing for web across device types, sizes, and browsers.
- Experience working within and contributing to evolving design systems and brand guidelines.
- Commitment to following WCAG criteria in designs, documentation, and acceptance testing.
- Strategic problem-solving skills and the ability to distill complex information into meaningful concepts, ideas, and designs.
- Experience presenting and defending design decisions, industry standards, and process approaches to stakeholders across levels of seniority and technical fluency.
- Openness to constructive feedback and collaboration with Designers, Product Managers, and Engineers.
- Ability to work independently across all phases of the design lifecycle while adapting to ambiguous and changing requirements and timelines.
- Important tooling note: the Product Design Team does not currently use AI-powered design or research tools; applicants are expected to be proficient without AI support or tooling.
$167,568 annually (Level
E), reflecting the salary of a position based in New York, NY. Salaries are subject to a regional pay adjustment if authorization is granted to work outside of the location listed in this posting.
