Position Title
Independent Medical Examiner – [Orthopedic / Neurological / Psychiatric] Physician
Position OverviewThe Independent Medical Examiner (IME Physician) is responsible for conducting objective, evidence‑based medical examinations for claimants referred by the New York State Office of the State Comptroller (OSC). The physician performs evaluations within their ABMS‑certified specialty, prepares written IME reports, and provides expert testimony when required. This role requires strict adherence to medical, ethical, and procedural standards established by OSC and applicable state regulations.
Minimum Qualifications- Doctor of Medicine (MD) or Doctor of Osteopathic Medicine (DO).
- Valid New York State medical license in good standing.
- Board Certification by the American Board of Medical Specialties (ABMS) in the relevant specialty:
- Orthopedic Surgery
- Neurology
- Psychiatry
- Minimum five years of clinical experience in the specified specialty.
- Experience performing Independent Medical Examinations (IMEs), functional assessments, or related evaluative services preferred.
- Ability to provide sworn testimony at hearings or related proceedings.
- No disciplinary actions, sanctions, or professional restrictions.
- Conduct independent, unbiased medical examinations in accordance with evidence‑based standards.
- Review medical records, diagnostic results, treatment histories, and supporting documentation prior to examination.
- Perform specialized assessments consistent with the physician’s ABMS‑recognized specialty.
- Ensure examinations are completed within OSC’s required timelines and procedural standards.
- Prepare comprehensive, clear, and medically defensible IME reports.
- Document findings, functional limitations, diagnoses, prognoses, and medical opinions following OSC formatting and submission requirements.
- Submit finalized reports within required deadlines.
- Respond to any requests for clarification or supplemental reporting.
- Provide expert testimony at administrative hearings or legal proceedings when required.
- Defend medical opinions based on objective clinical evidence.
- Maintain the highest level of professional integrity, impartiality, and ethical practice.
- Adhere to OSC procurement integrity guidelines, confidentiality requirements, and performance standards.
- Maintain ongoing compliance with:
- HIPAA
- New York State regulations
- IME procedural guidelines
- Participate in quality assurance reviews as required.
- Work closely with scheduling and coordination staff to ensure timely appointment availability.
- Communicate professionally with administrative staff, claimants, and OSC representatives.
- Provide updates on availability, credentialing, and licensure status.
- Competencies:

- Strong written communication skills for defensible medical documentation.
- Ability to maintain neutrality and objective in all evaluations.

- Professional, credible courtroom/hearing presence.
OSC‑approved examination sites or designated clinic facilities. Onsite and tele‑testimony arrangements as applicable.
Compensation: $350.00 per hour
