Instructor in Dermatology - Cutaneous Oncology

Position Summary

The Department of Dermatology at Columbia University Irving Medical Center seeks a full-time Instructor in Dermatology with a focused academic and clinical interest in cutaneous oncology.

This non-tenured junior faculty position is designed for a board-eligible or board-certified dermatologist pursuing an academic career in dermatology with advanced expertise in cutaneous oncology, medical education, and clinical and translational research. The initial appointment is anticipated to be for one year, with the possibility of renewal based on academic and clinical performance, programmatic needs, and availability of funding.

The Instructor will maintain an independent dermatology practice, provide resident education through clinical supervision in outpatient clinic and inpatient dermatology consultation coverage, and receive advanced mentored clinical experience in the Comprehensive Cutaneous Oncology Center. 0.2 FTE will be allocated for research and academic development.

The position has a particular emphasis on cutaneous lymphoma while providing broader experience in melanoma, Merkel cell carcinoma, advanced and high-risk non-Melanoma skin cancers, and dermatologic complications of systemic cancer therapy.

Columbia Dermatology has over a century-long tradition of excellence in dermatologic research, education, and patient care and is internationally recognized for its contributions to skin cancer, autoimmunity, bioengineering, wound healing, translational science, and more. Our faculty have pioneered landmark discoveries including:

• The use of corticosteroids for autoimmune skin diseases
• Development of the antifungal agent nystatin
• Innovations in photopheresis and Janus kinase inhibitors
• Cell and gene therapies in dermatology
• Advances in precision medicine, tissue engineering, and diagnostics

The department has one of the largest academic dermatopathology practices in the country, including a national referral service for complex skin tumors, lymphoproliferative disorders, and inflammatory conditions, including immunohistochemistry, RNA in situ hybridization, next generation sequencing, and other advanced diagnostic panels.

The Instructor will maintain an independent faculty dermatology practice within Columbia Doctors, providing evaluation and longitudinal management of patients with general and complex medical dermatologic conditions. Responsibilities will include diagnostic evaluation, dermatologic procedures and biopsies as appropriate, development and implementation of treatment plans, clinical documentation, coordination of care, and communication with referring physicians and other members of the healthcare team.

The Instructor will participate in the clinical education and supervision of Columbia dermatology residents one half-day per week in outpatient clinic and 2 weeks per year through on-call inpatient consult coverage at New York-Presbyterian/CUIMC facilities. Responsibilities will include direct resident preceptorship and supervision of patient care, including teaching of diagnostic and therapeutic decision-making, review of pathology and laboratory findings, procedural instruction, and case-based education.

The Instructor will participate in advanced, mentored clinical care under Dr. Geskin within the Comprehensive Cutaneous Oncology Center  major clinical focus will be cutaneous lymphomas, including mycosis fungoides, Sézary syndrome, primary cutaneous B-cell lymphomas, and other rare cutaneous lymphoproliferative disorders. Clinical activities will include collaboration with dermatopathology, hematology-oncology, medical oncology, radiation oncology, surgical oncology, dermatologic surgery, and other relevant specialties, as well as infusion ordering.

Additional experience will include the evaluation and management of patients with:

• Melanoma;
• Merkel cell carcinoma;
• Advanced and high-risk cutaneous squamous cell and basal cell carcinomas;
• Other uncommon cutaneous malignancies; and
• Dermatologic complications of systemic cancer therapy.
