Assistant Professor of Black Studies
FACULTY VACANCY ANNOUNCEMENT
The Black Studies Department at The City College of New York invites applications for a full-time, tenure‑track Assistant Professor of Black Studies who is firmly situated, trained, and credentialed in the field of Black Studies. Candidates should possess a PhD in hand by August 2026. The faculty member’s research and teaching area should be centered in the social sciences, with preference for Urban Studies, Sociology, Psychology, Legal Studies, Economics, Political Science, or Architecture.
Black Studies is an interdisciplinary, collaborative department focused on the study of the African diaspora, the intellectual contributions of major African and African American scholars and cultural workers, and crucial issues confronting peoples of African descent worldwide. Faculty are committed to interdisciplinary teaching and scholarship and engage with the Harlem community and beyond. As a socially engaged department at a Minority‑ and Hispanic‑Serving Institution, the department is committed to expanding academic course offerings to grow the major, minor, and accelerated master’s degree.
Successful candidates will teach a diverse student population while maintaining an active agenda of scholarship and participating in student mentoring, departmental, and college service activities in a large public university setting.
QualificationsPh.D. degree in relevant area(s) of experience or equivalent. Candidates must demonstrate the ability to teach successfully, achieve scholarly accomplishment, and cooperate with others for the good of the institution.
Preferred Qualifications- Firmly situated, trained, and credentialed in Black Studies.
- Preference for faculty in Urban Studies, Sociology, Psychology, Legal Studies, Economics, Political Science, or Architecture.
Up to $94,909. Salary commensurate with education and experience. CUNY offers a competitive compensation and benefits package including health insurance, pension and retirement benefits, paid parental leave, and savings programs. Mentoring and support for research, scholarship, and publication are also provided.
