Overview
The Brooklyn Kindergarten Society (BKS) is the original “born in Brooklyn.” Since 1891, BKS has provided high-quality early childhood education to working families. We serve children ages 2-5 with a play-based curriculum that combines reading, writing, movement and music with STEAM (Science, Technology, Engineering, Arts, and Mathematics) learning to ensure equitable access to early education in Brooklyn.
PositionTeacher’s Aide provides support to the Group and Assistant Teacher in the implementation of the developmentally appropriate curriculum (Creative Curriculum) for the assigned classroom, as provided by classroom lesson plans or the team. The Aide will work closely with children, staff, and families to ensure the center runs smoothly and children’s needs are met each day, assist with supervision of all children, implement classroom activities, collaborate with other classroom staff and volunteers, and assist with general maintenance of the classroom to ensure health and safety.
Responsibilities- Assist in the direction of a class of students (may be mixed age) through daily activities
- Communicate with families about children’s progress and development
- Planning and Program Implementation
- Understand the goals and objectives of BKS and the curriculum; articulate what children are learning about each unit
- Identify classroom materials needed to support curriculum implementation
- Engage children in conversation and provide positive guidance
- Support lesson plan implementation and assist during meal times, bathroom breaks, and handwashing
- Assessment support: maintain observation logs and other running records; navigate systems like Teaching Strategies GOLD online
- Provide consistent supervision considering developmentally appropriate activities and health needs
- Foster relationships with teachers, family workers/social workers, parents and guardians for school readiness
- Promote professional growth through self-reflection and ongoing performance
- Fulfill mandated reporter responsibilities as stated in policies
- Perform other duties to support smooth facility operations as requested by the supervisor
- Report to Center Director
- Minimum of 6 months experience working with children ages 2-4 years old
- Minimum 2.5 GPA in high school;
Associate’s degree preferred - CDA in early childhood education preferred
- Experience working with low-income populations and diverse cultures
Base pay range: $16.50/hr - $16.50/hr
Salary details are provided by Brooklyn Kindergarten Society; actual pay based on skills and experience.
