About the Anne Saxelby Legacy Fund
Founded in memory of legendary cheesemonger Anne Saxelby, the Anne Saxelby Legacy Fund (ASLF) sponsors monthlong, all‑expenses‑paid apprenticeships for young adults to live on sustainable farms across the country. Apprentices work full‑time with a farm/production team for 30 days, gaining hands‑on experience and inspiration to create change in their communities.
Apprenticeship OverviewASLF partners with farms to provide one‑month, full‑time working apprenticeships. Apprentices receive $20 per hour for 40‑hour work weeks, along with lodging, a stipend, and travel expenses. Apprentices will create a Storytelling Project to document their impact.
Responsibilities- Pair with a host farm or food business as an employee for a 30‑day immersive experience.
- Participate in farming and production activities, following a tailored program that covers a general overview of the operation.
- Compensated at $20 per hour for 40‑hour work weeks; lodging, stipend, and travel expenses provided.
- Create a Storytelling Project that demonstrates the impact of the month and why the work is important.
- Enthusiasm for the ASLF mission.
- A strong work ethic.
- Ability to work outdoors in all types of weather and perform physical activities as needed.
- Basic competency with word processing and spreadsheets.
- Ability to work alone on a task or take direction from peers and supervisors.
- Ability to attend safety and orientation training as required.
- Strong communication skills throughout the apprenticeship, including sharing photos and videos.
The work environment depends on the unique host farm and the season. Participants should expect a variety of conditions and experiences on a working farm, including variable weather, outdoor work, and in‑facility chores such as cheese making, livestock barn, packing‑house, cheese cave, or pop‑up retail stand at a farmers’ market.
AgreementUpon application, the ASLF Selection Committee reviews candidates and schedules interviews. Selected apprentices become an employee of the host farm; earnings are subject to payroll taxes and customary deductions. A formal agreement outlines the host farm, apprenticeship curriculum, contact information, orientation, code of conduct, and important dates.
TimelineThis position is hourly: $20 per hour plus lodging, stipend, and travel expenses.
