Brooklyn Kindergarten Society (BKS) was founded in 1891 and has been a pioneer in equitable early childhood education for 130+ years. BKS provides full‑day, year‑round academic experiences and care for children ages 2‑5. Its curriculum is play‑based, integrating reading, writing, movement, music, and STEAM. The goal is to give Brooklyn’s youngest learners a strong, equitable first educational step.

The Group Teacher – Study Plan is the classroom leader responsible for implementing the developmentally appropriate Creative Curriculum and delegating classroom tasks to the Assistant Teacher and Teacher’s Aide. The teacher collaborates with colleagues, supervisors, and families to ensure a high‑quality education for all students.

• Assist in directing a class of students (possibly mixed age) through daily activities.
• Communicate with families about children’s progress and work.

Planning (25%)

• Understand the goals, objectives, and vision of BKS.
• Understand the goals and objectives of the curriculum.
• Plan well‑designed lessons aligned with current units of study and culturally relevant pedagogy.
• Implement units and lesson plans thoughtfully and intentionally.
• Identify goals for children and determine staff and parent support.
• Identify classroom materials needed to support curriculum goals.

Program Implementation (25%)

• Provide positive guidance for children.
• Implement daily lesson plans.
• Lead various small‑group and center activities.
• Delegate academic and classroom responsibilities to assistant teacher and aides.
• Align individual student goals with academic activities.
• Work in small groups to reinforce lessons and provide one‑on‑one instruction.
• Create a warm, welcoming, print‑rich, and culturally responsive environment.

• Complete and maintain observations and running records.
• Navigate Teaching Strategies GOLD online assessment system.

• Provide consistent supervision that considers developmentally appropriate activities and health needs of the group and individual child.

• Foster relationships with key stakeholders: other teachers, family workers/social workers, parents and guardians to support school readiness.

• Assume responsibility for professional performance and self‑reflection.

• Serve as mandated reporter per Child Abuse and Neglect Policies.
• Participate in staff meetings, conferences, training sessions, and workshops as assigned.
• Perform any other work‑related duties necessary to the smooth functioning of the center as requested by the supervisor.

• At least an Associate’s Degree working toward a Bachelor’s in Early Childhood Education/Childhood Education (Required).
• Bachelor’s Degree in Early Childhood Education/Childhood Education preferred;
  Master’s or ongoing master’s degree highly preferred along with certification in B‑2, N‑6, or Pre‑Kindergarten through 6.
• Candidates with degrees in Child Psychology, Child Development, Elementary Education, Special Education, or Students with Disabilities (B‑2, 1‑6) and at least 12 credits in Early Childhood Education are acceptable. Must be willing to enroll in a Master’s program if possessing such degrees.
• Minimum of 2 years’ experience with children ages 2‑4.
• Minimum 2.5 cumulative undergraduate GPA for those with an undergraduate degree.
• Experience working with low‑income populations and diverse cultures.
