Overview
Assistant Dean of Academic Affairs
Reporting to the Dean of Academic Affairs, the Assistant Dean of Academic Affairs is a key member of the Provost’s leadership team, working collaboratively with constituents from across the College and CUNY Central to support the following: curriculum development; faculty/staff professional development; study abroad initiatives; strategic planning; grant implementation; and other academic needs under the purview of the Dean of Academic Affairs.
This position will lead and participate in task forces and councils as assigned by the Dean of Academic Affairs to improve student success, retention, and completion of initiatives. The Assistant Dean may represent the Dean of Academic Affairs and/or the Provost and Vice President of Academic Affairs at College, University, and other external programs as needed, and will serve on appropriate college and university committees and task forces.
The Assistant Dean will have regular and significant involvement in the development of policy proposals related to academic affairs, especially in the areas noted within this job description.
Specific responsibilities include but are not limited to the following:
Responsibilities- Curriculum
- Oversees the development, revision, and submission of curriculum proposals including new courses, changes to degree programs, new degree programs, and changes to academic policies at the College, including support of the Curriculum Committee and its chair in preparing documents for meetings, advancing them through the shared governance process, and liaising with other parts of the College and University to ensure that implementation of curriculum changes are performed efficiently and effectively.
- Oversees final academic approvals of transfer credit evaluations, including Transfer Explorer administrative functions, and takes lead on Credit for Prior Learning (CPL) initiatives, working collaboratively across the College and CUNY.
- Liaises with CUNY Central, including the Pathways Committees, and the New York State Education Department in the curriculum and program approval process and manage the College's communication with those offices.
- College Center for Teaching and Learning
- Coordinates the activities and assessment of the Center for Teaching and Learning (CTL), including serving on the CUNY CTL committee, collaboratively planning and implementing professional development to support teaching and learning strategies for all instructional faculty and staff, and assessing the effectiveness of programming.
- Study Abroad
- Leads the College’s support and administration of Study Abroad programs and courses, especially as it relates to creating, maintaining, and assessing practices and policies that meet CUNY requirements, utilizing appropriate budgetary resources and risk management procedures.
- Strategic Planning
- Assist the Dean of Academic Affairs in the School’s strategic planning process, including creation, revision, and assessment of the Academic Plan.
- Work with the Dean and Chairs to develop, implement, and monitor the impact of departmental strategic plans and operational goals in coordination with the Academic Plan of the College.
- Grant Creation and Implementation
- Assists Academic Affairs leadership, as needed, in grant work and securing external funding; this may include the following: grant application support; serving as PI; budget monitoring and spend-down plans; assessment work; report writing, and supervision of grant-related employees in accordance with Guttman and CUNY policies.
- Other
- Works with Registrar to manage revisions to the Academic Affairs sections of the College Bulletin and the Academic Calendar.
- Supervise assigned staff and provide guidance to faculty on re-assigned time projects in accordance with Guttman and CUNY policies.
