The Green Vale School is a co-educational, independent day school (PN-8) located on a beautiful 40-acre campus on the North Shore of Long Island. Approximately 25 miles from New York City, Green Vale has served families in surrounding suburban communities for over 100 years. The Green Vale School has an opening for a School Media Specialist beginning on August 31, 2026.

General Summary

Green Vale School is currently seeking a School Media Specialist to serve the Middle School and Lower School populations. The School Media Specialist is responsible for conducting literature and digital media classes, as well as collaborating with teachers on classroom projects. Knowledge of the Follett circulation system and facility with a variety of technology platforms is highly desirable.

  • Teach 20 classes per week - grades 3-8
  • Write narrative progress reports for all students
  • Participate in department, grade level and divisional meetings
  • Manage the circulation desk, including checking materials in and out and processing holds.
  • Assist students in locating materials, utilizing library technology, and understanding library policies.
  • Maintain the physical collection through shelving, shelf-reading, and ensuring materials are in proper order.
  • Select, process, and catalog new materials, including books, media, and electronic resources, following established library standards (e.g., MARC, Dewey Decimal System).
  • Assist with collection development tasks, such as tracking orders, processing invoices, and preparing materials for binding or repair.
  • Manage and troubleshoot basic issues with library equipment (printers, computers, self-checkout stations).
  • Compile usage statistics and prepare reports as required.
Education and Experience
  • Minimum of 1-3 years of experience working in a library setting or related customer service/administrative environment.
  • Master's degree in Library Science (MLS) or Master's degree in Library and Information Science (MLIS) from an ALA-accredited institution, OR state certification/licensure as a School Library Media Specialist/Teacher.

Skills and Abilities
  • Demonstrated knowledge of literature for students in Grades 3-8.
  • Proficiency with modern library automation systems and educational technology tools.
  • Experience in planning and delivering instruction to students in the intermediate and middle school grades.
Compensation
  • The salary will be commensurate with experience, the range is $64,000 -$68,000.
