Physical Education Teacher, Elementary School

The Physical Education & Health Teacher and Athletic Coach reports directly to the Head of Upper School and is an integral member of the Lower and Upper School teams and Physical Education department at The Cathedral School of St. John the Divine. Candidates must have experience teaching and coaching children aged 5-14 years old. A Bachelor’s degree or higher in education with a concentration in physical education or health and wellness is required.

Teacher/Coach ResponsibilitiesCo-teach various grade levels of Physical Education and Health classes
Plan lessons, units, and projects that facilitate active learning to support and differentiate instruction in health and wellness classes for kindergarten through eighth-grade students.
Proctor/teach two trimesters of elective periods in the Upper School
Utilize an array of assessment methods and keep organized records of assessments for physical education, health, and wellness classes
Coach junior varsity and varsity athletic teams before/after school hours
Serve as an Upper School advisor for six to eight students in support of their academic progress and social-emotional well-being
If schedule permits, attend regular Upper School Guidance Meetings with the student support team and teachers to discuss students’ academic and behavioral concerns
Collaborate and work cooperatively with the other members of the Physical Education department to coordinate a clear scope and sequence from grade to grade in terms of both subject matter and skills development
Partner with the Learning Specialists and School Psychologists, when appropriate, to ensure students are being fully supported
Be proactive, clear, and consistent in family communications to promote partnership in service of the students
Write comments/narratives twice yearly for students
Attend or lead family/teacher conferences twice yearly
Fulfill regular duties such as lunch, recess, bus duty, etc.
Attend weekly Faculty and School-wide meetings
Is available for other school events and activities as needed (e.g., overnight trips, dance chaperones, field trips, etc.).
The Physical Education & Health Teacher and Athletic Coach is a 10-month, in-person role with a start date of August 2025. The salary range for this position is $75,000 - $90,000.
