Location: New York

SCO Youth Workforce Initiative is a client centered model that prioritizes the personal career and employment goals and objectives of each youth served in the program. The Career Coach will integrate employment and career readiness services for runaway, homeless and at‑risk youth ages 16‑24. The Career Coach will build connections with local employers, training providers and workforce agencies to create job, internship, educational and apprenticeship pipelines.

REPORTS TO:

SPECIFIC RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Maintain an active caseload and work towards achieving targets as outlined in the program contract.
  • Assess each youth’s personal needs and develop individual plans to assist youth in achieving their educational/employment goals.
  • Design and facilitate on-site workforce readiness workshops at the Brooklyn Youth Center and Independence Inns programs on topics such as interviewing skills, job searching, workplace professional development, educational and other employment-related workshops.
  • Facilitate one-on-one employment support to youths.
  • Facilitate quarterly hiring events targeted at youth ages 16‑24.
  • Guide, refer and connect youth to vocational training opportunities in the community, including industry-recognized credential programs.
  • Remain up to date on related and supportive resources to refer youths for additional assistance as needed.
  • Help youth secure essential items and supports such as clothing, transportation, ’s work permits, and certifications.
  • Adjust approaches and strategies to coaching depending on the needs of the program and individual participants.
  • Build partnerships with staffing/job placement agencies, training, and education providers to support resident’s literacy, verbal and writing skills.
  • Build partnerships with Trade Schools, Colleges and Universities to schedule college visits and tours.
  • Schedule interviews with potential employers in the community.
  • Conduct field work including but not limited to accompanying youth to job interviews.
  • Provide support and feedback on workplace issues.
  • Manage and track monthly outcomes and any other relevant data.
  • Record client information, progress reports and any other relevant data.
  • Prepare and submit reports as needed.
  • Attend workforce networking events and training workshops to remain informed.
  • Model safe and positive workplace behavior and work readiness skills (teamwork, conflict resolution, positive attitude, timeliness, etc.).
  • Utilize trauma-informed practices to support participants; establish constructive relationships with participants as a positive role model.
  • Work collaboratively with the Program Supervisor, and BYC team, including Case Management, Housing Navigators, and Financial Coach to find ways to cultivate partnerships with the youth and attract more participation to the program.
  • Work collaboratively with program staff to establish and achieve goals with participants.
  • Complete mandatory SCO training as assigned.
  • Attend staff meetings, and supervisory sessions, as required.

QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Two years of professional experience in career coaching
  • A minimum of one year’s experience working with young people
  • Ability to work in a culturally diverse setting. Displays sensitivity to cultural and socioeconomic characteristics of populations served

  • Ability to work independently and work collaboratively with a team
  • Excellent written and verbal skills
  • Must be flexible
    -including attendance, punctuality and occasional work outside of normal business hours
  • Ability to exercise good judgement and apply problem solving skills
  • Possess strong organizational and communication skills
