Reporting to the Director of Disability Services, the Student Disability Services Specialist supports the daily operations of the Disability Services Office at Bronx Community College and works directly with students requesting reasonable accommodations within a student-centered academic model. The Specialist ensures compliance with the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA), Section 504 of the Rehabilitation Act of 1973, and the ADA Amendments Act of 2008 (ADAAA) by coordinating reasonable accommodations such as note-takers, readers, scribes, sign language interpreters, testing accommodations, assistive technology, and other academic adjustments as needed.
Key Responsibilities- Coordinate and implement reasonable accommodations in compliance with federal regulations
- Conduct confidential intake meetings, review documentation, and determine eligibility in consultation with the Director
- Coordinate testing accommodations, including scheduling, faculty communication, and compliance monitoring
- Organize assistive technology and interpretive services based on individual student needs
- Provide information, referrals, and ongoing support to prospective and enrolled students
- Assist students in understanding their disabilities and navigating academic and personal concerns
- Support the development and implementation of programs and advocacy initiatives for students with disabilities
- Collaborate with the Director to coordinate training and workshops for faculty, staff, and administrators
- Promote awareness of disability services and related events through marketing, email, and print communications
- Manage recruitment and outreach efforts for Disability Services programs and events
- Monitor and support use of CUNY’s student disability management system
- Track services, assess program outcomes, and prepare reports as needed
- Provide guidance to faculty, administrators, and student organizations regarding disability-related concerns
- Perform additional duties as assigned by the Director
Bachelor’s degree and four years’ related experience required
Preferred Qualifications- Minimum of two years of experience in disability services
- Master’s degree in Disability Studies or a related field
- Demonstrated excellence in customer service
- Experience working collaboratively with faculty, staff, and students
- Strong computer skills, including proficiency in Microsoft Office applications (Outlook, Word, Excel, and PowerPoint)
- Ability to work effectively both independently and as part of a team
- Excellent written, oral, facilitation, and interpersonal communication skills
- Strong organizational and time management skills
- Assists with planning and providing a comprehensive program of services for students with disabilities.
- Assists with daily supervision of the unit, including budgets, personnel supervision, and facilities/equipment management
- Provides guidance and advisement to student organizations, administrators, faculty and others on concerns and issues related to students with special needs
- Interacts with counselors, disability accommodations specialists, and external community organizations to maintain a broad inventory of available services
- Presents programs and workshops, and prepares communications to students and others promoting the goals of the unit
- Organizes and provides for assistive technology and interpretive services
- May develop and/or review individual educational plans that incorporate individually designed academic support services and accommodations within the guidelines of the American with Disabilities Act (ADA)
- Performs related duties as assigned.
Salary commensurate with education and experience: $70,815-$76,937
