Teacher of Art (One Year)

The Brearley School, an independent girls’ school serving over 770 students K–12, welcomes candidates for a full-time, one-year position as a Teacher of Art beginning August 2026.

• Five images of completed student work in a course for which they served as the instructor of record.
• Five images of examples of work from their current studio practice.

• Teaching a full‑time complement of courses in the art curriculum in grades one through twelve; course assignments for this position are primarily in the Middle and Upper School.
• Offering an after‑school elective in drawing, digital art, or another form of visual expression.
• Participating in grade‑level team planning meetings with art colleagues.
• Assisting all departmental projects: displaying student art throughout the year and in the annual art show; preparing rooms and materials; managing supplies and student artwork; and other projects, as assigned.
• Implementing an inclusive, anti‑bias, and anti‑racist pedagogy.
• Contributing to the life of the school and the students outside of the department.

• Have three or more years of experience teaching art, with an emphasis on teaching advanced drawing and painting.
• Have a Master of Fine Arts (MFA) or equivalent.
• Have substantial knowledge of art history and contemporary art.
• Maintain an active studio practice.
• Possess excellent oral and written communication skills.
• Demonstrate a sincere interest in the creative development of young people.
• Have a commitment to helping students think independently and develop confidence in their abilities.
• Be interested in working collaboratively throughout the entire art program.

Art at Brearley, taught from first grade through twelfth, introduces students to a formal visual vocabulary that repeats and escalates through the curriculum. The program encourages curiosity, skill development, confident and creative expression, and visual problem‑solving. Students may take Art within the academic program or choose from a rich range of extracurricular opportunities.

In 2025‑2026, the total salary for this position ranges from $78,500 to $158,500 depending on years of full‑time teaching experience. Salaries are updated annually in February.
