About Building Beats:

Building Beats is an education nonprofit that empowers underserved youth through workshops and mentorship in digital music production, DJing, music coding, and podcasting. Our workshops transform schools and community centers throughout NYC into pop-up studios where young people can explore, create, and share their passions. We provide a platform and safe space for the next generation to chart a future doing what they love.

We engage young people by teaching through popular music genres, utilizing accessible technology, and bringing on Teaching Artists who can relate to our student population.

Position Overview:

As a Building Beats Teaching Artist, you will share your passion for music by leading fun and engaging workshops in music production, DJing, music coding, and/or podcasting. You will facilitate in-school, after-school and community center residencies, using accessible tools and web-based DAWs/programs, and help students create amazing final projects. This part-time role requires traveling to various sites across the five boroughs and working independently.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Facilitate workshops at various schools and community centers throughout NYC, with a focus on music production, DJing, podcasting, and music coding.
  • Create a positive vibe and supportive space where every student feels included.
  • Bring our curriculum to life and tailor it to inspire diverse groups of young minds by creating and submitting lesson plans on a monthly basis.
  • Help students develop self-directed creative projects such as songs, albums, or podcasts and turn them into masterpieces.
  • Collaborate with our awesome team and community partners to continually improve and innovate our workshops.
  • Attend monthly professional development meetings and trainings as scheduled, remotely and in person.
  • Serve as a Building Beats ambassador in NYC schools and communities.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Experience working in schools or in a youth development role.
  • On-time, professional, and effective communicator.
  • Basic understanding of music production, podcasting, music coding and/or DJing.
  • Ability to succeed in low-resource settings, you know how to work with what you got!
  • Passion for youth/community development.
  • Ability to pass background checks including NYC Department of Education and Department of Health fingerprinting, National Sex Offender Registry clearance, State Central Registry Clearance, and Criminal History Disclosure clearance.
  • Spanish proficiency is a plus but not required.

Compensation/

Schedule:

  • This is a paid, part-time gig.
  • $65/hour for teaching
  • $25/hour for admin/training
  • Flexible work schedule, teaching 1 to 7 workshops per week based on your availability. Residency length can vary from 6 weeks to full school year engagements.
