Position Description Teacher Apprentices observe and learn from classroom teachers. They will co‑teach in the classroom, support teachers with tutoring, grading, and individual or small group student instruction, and provide substitute coverage for teachers. Depending on school needs and prior experience, apprentices may also teach their own class of students, allowing for direct teaching experience within a more limited teaching load.
Apprentices also offer teacher support with a variety of work inside and outside the classroom, including teaching enrichment classes, organizing student events, and developing mentoring relationships with students. Through summer and school‑year professional development and regular meetings with an instructional coach, apprentices gain experience and develop teaching skills. This is a one‑year role with the option to renew for an additional year based on performance.
The goal for all Apprentices is to become a classroom teacher within 1‑2 years after learning by doing what it means to be a teacher at Inwood Academy.
- Teach classes on behalf of deans and teacher‑leaders who are observing other teachers.
- Provide substitute teaching coverage for teachers within the school.
- Teach one class or small groups of students.
- Periodically plan and deliver instruction, gradually taking on more responsibility throughout the year.
- Develop teaching skills to potentially become a full‑time teacher at the school.
- Support students by providing one‑on‑one and small group tutoring daily, and small group intervention and student support.
- Observe teachers to improve instructional techniques and classroom management.
- Meet regularly with a coach to implement feedback on lessons and instruction.
- Teach or help coordinate an elective class.
- Build effective relationships among teachers, parents, and the community to improve school culture.
- Foster a school climate that supports the school’s mission statement; promote respect and appreciation for all students, staff, and parents.

- Bachelor’s degree in a specific subject matter or education preferred.
- Enrollment in a bachelor’s program with a major or minor in education and a minimum of 60 credits is required.
- Some teaching or tutoring experience is preferred.
- Experience supporting teachers through coaching or directing.
- Experience working with students with diverse backgrounds and needs.
- Experience and general understanding of educational administration.
