Overview
Seeking an innovative high school history teacher for GO-NYC High School (Great Oaks Kathleen Sherry Charter School – NYC). The role focuses on teaching US and/or Global History for the 2024-25 school year within an urban, mission-aligned environment that emphasizes Mastery, Leadership, and Community.
GO-NYC prepares students to shape the world through rigorous, project-based learning, advanced coursework, and targeted tutoring. The program centers equity, culturally responsive teaching, and strong relationships, with an emphasis on high expectations for both conduct and achievement.
Role DescriptionGO-NYC High School is seeking a dynamic, creative, mission-aligned urban educator to join our team as a High School History Teacher for the 2024-25 school year, specializing in US and/or Global History. Teachers are expected to prepare students for college and career success through rigorous instruction and consistently high expectations for conduct, modeling hard work, a desire for learning, and strong character.
Responsibilities- Curriculum & Instruction:
Demonstrate solid knowledge of content; establish, communicate, and uphold high expectations for student learning and quality of work; use a variety of rigorous, engaging instructional strategies; execute detailed lesson plans aligned to a year-long academic plan; take responsibility for student learning needs; communicate that the work is important and that the teacher will support students. - Data Analysis:
Track and analyze student data to identify needs and set ambitious, attainable goals; plan and implement strategies to achieve targets; collaborate with the principal and other teachers to revise curriculum based on assessment data. - Classroom Environment:
Maintain an efficient, respectful, and positive tone; maximize time for student learning; keep students on task; enforce school rules and expectations; build relationships that support academic and personal growth; supervise students inside and outside the classroom and during transitions; foster a collaborative advisory classroom community. - Additional Responsibilities:
Contribute to student and school success, take on additional responsibilities as needed, communicate with parents about successes and struggles, maintain an orderly school culture, occasionally lead professional development sessions, and perform other duties as necessary to fulfill the school mission.
The successful candidate will have proven experience in implementing high-quality instruction that improves student achievement in an urban school, strong relationship-building skills, and clear communication with multiple stakeholders. They will have:
- A strong academic record with a Bachelor's degree from a competitive college or university; an advanced degree in the subject area is preferred
- At least two years of experience improving student achievement at an urban school
- Knowledge of high school History content
- State teaching certification (strongly preferred)
- Excellent classroom management abilities
- A firm belief that all students can succeed
- A do-whatever-it-takes attitude, including willingness to work occasionally on weekends or evenings
- An exceptional ability to respond to feedback and implement it promptly
Great Oaks provides a competitive compensation and benefits package; exact compensation varies based on experience, certification, and education. The anticipated salary range is $63,000–$103,456.
