Games and Movement Teacher (Grades 1–4)
SUMMARYThe Games and Movement Teacher nurtures students’ physical, social, and emotional development through rhythmic movement, cooperative play, and age-appropriate games that build coordination, balance, and confidence. Lessons are designed to complement the classroom curriculum and support the healthy development of the whole child—head, heart, and hands.
The Games and Movement curriculum in a Waldorf school differs from a traditional Physical Education curriculum in a number of ways. Cooperative games and activities aimed at building children’s awareness of their own bodies in space take precedence and competitive games, particularly team sports, are not introduced until the later elementary years. At Brooklyn Waldorf School we take students outside in all weather conditions and often use the local playgrounds as our classrooms.
The Games and Movement Teacher Position makes up a partial course load, the position is brought to full-time with an appropriate number of coverage and assistant periods.
All candidates must have strong classroom management. At Brooklyn Waldorf, we use Responsive Classroom to guide our approach to classroom management.
