FACULTY VACANCY ANNOUNCEMENTMedgar Evers College (MEC), a nationally recognized leader in urban-serving education, is one of twenty-three colleges within the City University of New York (CUNY) System. Named after the late civil rights leader, Medgar Wiley Evers ), the College's mission is to develop and maintain high-quality, professional, career-oriented undergraduate degree programs in the context of liberal education.
Located in Central Brooklyn, MEC, a comprehensive college, was established in 1970 with a mandate to meet the educational and social needs of the Central Brooklyn community. The college enrolls over four thousand students from 105 countries, including over 1500 students in the School of Science, Health, and Technology in its B.S. degree programs in Biology, Computer Science, Environmental Science, Mathematics, and Nursing, AS programs in science, and AAS and P.N. programs in Nursing.
The Biology department is the largest in the college, with about nine hundred students in its B.S. degree program and about 300 students in the AS program. The department is located in a $247 million School of Science building with state-of-the-art smart classrooms, teaching labs, and research modules. The school has two core research facilities
- Cellular, Molecular, and Advanced Imaging and Chemical Analysis. These Core facilities are equipped with high-end equipment, including SEM, Confocal, Zeiss Axioimager, inverted fluorescence, Atomic Force Research Microscopes, Ultracentrifuges, DNA Sequencers, Flow cytometers, etc. HPLC, GC-MS, NMR, ICP-OES, FT-IR and Raman, X-ray Diffractometer, UV-VIS-NIR Spectrometer, D.S. Calorimeter, D.T. Analyzer, Kodak Image Station, and mammalian cell culture facilities.
The Department of Biology is seeking to fill one tenure-track faculty position at the Assistant Professor rank with a firm commitment to teaching and research. Successful candidates will be required to teach undergraduate courses in Microbiology, as well as participate in the teaching of our multiple-section courses, such as general biology. Candidates will be required to develop courses and curricula that incorporate evidence-based educational practices to meet the growing needs of the department.
All candidates are expected to establish an active research program involving undergraduate students. Grantsmanship is an essential requirement. Student mentoring and advising are important components of the duties of faculty. Additional faculty duties include effective participation in departmental, school, college, and university-wide activities. Medgar Evers College emphasizes excellent teaching in a student-focused, diverse undergraduate environment.
Applicants must possess a Ph.D. or the equivalent and have demonstrated expertise in teaching undergraduates in the sub-disciplines of Biology, using innovative STEM pedagogy. For the microbiology position, candidates must have a graduate degree in microbiology with an emphasis on up-to-date molecular approaches. All candidates must have taken several graduate courses in the sub-discipline they are applying to teach.
Postdoctoral experience or five years of relevant work experience would be an advantage, as well as demonstrated ability to publish in peer-reviewed journals, grant writing, and success in obtaining extramural funding. Evidence of effectiveness in teaching, including familiarity with current pedagogical techniques and course design, and the ability to work as a team player to advance the department's goals of developing and sustaining competitive research and degree programs.
Excellent communication skills, a record of ongoing scholarly achievements demonstrated by recent publications in peer-reviewed research journals, and the ability to obtain external funding are essential. Special consideration may be given to candidates with existing research grants capable of transferring to Medgar Evers College.
