What is the Role?The Permanent Substitute Teacher will become an integral part of the Coney Island Prep Middle School (CIPMS) community as they step in to support scholars whose teachers are absent for a day or longer periods of time. A pillar of flexibility, they will rotate as needed through classes and duties maintaining classroom rhythm by assigning homework, managing classroom activities, and taking attendance.

The Permanent Substitute Teacher plays a critical role in ensuring the continuity of high-quality instruction and a positive, safe, and structured learning environment s individual embodies our values, models professional consistency, and provides seamless coverage across content areas and grade levels while maintaining strong relationships with scholars and staff. This is not a “coverage-only” role—our Permanent Subs are fundamental members of the CIPMS team, contributing to culture systems, advisory, student success, and operational flow.
WhatYou’ll Be Asked To Do
- Facilitate teachers’ lesson plans with fidelity in the event of a teacher absence
- Assume a high level of personal responsibility for the safety, well‑being, and learning of all students
- On a daily basis, provide high‑quality classroom coverage across all subjects and grade levels by teaching academically rigorous and culturally relevant assigned coverage lesson plans with fidelity
- Collaborate with content and grade teams to understand course routines and expectations
- Use school wide systems such as Exit Tickets, Do Nows, and aligned data trackers when applicable
- Communicate effectively with all scholars, their families, and staff
- Commit to a culture of consistently implementing school‑wide systems, structures, and procedures
- Eradicate the effects of racism, poverty and other forms of oppression in our school community by making resources, opportunities, support systems, and classrooms equitable and accessible for all our stakeholders
- Be proactive in creating a positive, structured, results‑oriented, and fun learning environment that supports the needs of students with various abilities and experiences
- Participate in school community responsibilities such as lunch duty, dismissal and hallway duties, daily homeroom, bi‑weekly advisory groups, weekly content and grade team meetings, whole‑staff professional development, lesson internalization and practice, and office hours once a week
- Serve as an additional adult presence during community events such as the awards banquets, field trips, community meetings and testing seasons
- Engage in coaching cycles to strengthen classroom management, culture systems, and instructional delivery
- Participate in the continuous improvement of school norms, routines, and culture infrastructure
- Passion for education and a dedication to Coney Island Prep’s mission, beliefs, and values and its commitment to anti‑racism
- Steadfast belief that all students can achieve at the highest academic levels and deserve an opportunity to succeed in the college and career of their choice
- Bachelor's degree and NYS teaching certification required, Master’s degree strongly preferred; we offer $2,000 towards the completion of a Master’s degree and NY State certification within two years of employment
- Two years experience in a similar role desired
