Position Overview
The Assistant Camp Director at 4-H Camp Owahta, a 128‑acre camp in McGraw, NY, leads staff, creates safe and engaging experiences for campers, and oversees daily operations and safety. The role is a full‑time exempt position for the summer of 2026.
CompensationSummer salary: $3,600.00 to $4,800.00, commensurate with experience.
Responsibilities- Assist the Outdoor Recreation Director and Day Camp Director with staff training development and facilitation.
- Design, deliver, and evaluate summer camp programs that meet the needs and interests of campers and parents.
- Manage daily camp operations, including supervision of campers and staff, and enforcement of camp policies and procedures.
- Serve as the primary point of contact for emergencies and medical or mental‑health crises involving campers or staff.
- Conduct and supervise staff scheduling, break times, and staff‑to‑camper ratios.
- Support camper behavior management, conflict mediation, and personal development.
- Assist with weekly paperwork (registration, sign‑ins, permits, evaluations, surveys) and maintenance of required records and logs.
- Maintain American Camp Association accreditation and camp compliance with Department of Health and ACA standards.
- Support and facilitate 4‑H Leader‑in‑Training (LIT) and Counselor‑in‑Training (CIT) programs, including lesson‑plan writing and program evaluation.
- Attend 4‑H Camp Owahta staff training week (June
22–July
32026) and participate in all scheduled training events. - Develop and pursue a professional development plan in collaboration with the Outdoor Recreation Director.
- Must be at least 21 years of age.
- Bachelor’s Degree.
- Minimum six months of leadership experience in a summer camp setting (e.g., Program Director, Lifeguard, Senior Counselor) or equivalent experience in an outdoor program or classroom setting for youth ages5‑16.
- Ability to build positive, approachable relationships with youth, parents, and staff.
- Willingness to work and live on‑site at 4-H Camp Owahta, McGraw, NY, for the entire season (July5–August
142026). - Flexibility to work evenings and weekends.
- Knowledge of positive youth development principles.
- Demonstrated good character and integrity in professional settings.
- Current CPR and First Aid certification from courses approved by the NYS Department of Health (preferred).
- Experience as a staff member at an overnight summer camp (preferred).
- Interest in working with youth and young adults, primarily outdoors (preferred).
- Ability to teach skills to staff and campers ages5‑16 and adapt to dynamic environments (preferred).
- Demonstrated resilience and sound judgment during challenging situations (preferred).
Full‑time exempt, 100% FTE. No sponsorship for employment visa status is available. The summer season runs July5–August
