August 31, 2026 | Salary: $60,000 - $150,000 |

Schedule:

10‑month position covered by the Professional Employees' Federation (PEF). Regular hours: 8:00AM – 4:00PM, Mondays through Fridays, with one extended day per week until 5:00PM on Wednesdays for faculty meetings. Occasional overnight work (approximately one multi‑night trip per year) and occasional event support (approximately four per year) that may occur during early mornings, evenings, or weekends.

the Position

The Bank Street School for Children seeks an innovative Math/Science Teacher for the Upper School who will primarily teach 5th‑grade students. The role combines subject‑area instruction with homeroom responsibilities, building community and attending to the social‑emotional development of students. Co‑advisors provide social‑emotional support, executive function coaching, close collaboration with a co‑advisor, and regular communication with families.

Qualifications
  • Master's degree in education or related field.
  • At least three years of experience teaching upper elementary or middle school students.
  • Experience with student‑centered math and science curricula.
  • Ability to work collaboratively in a progressive school that values social justice and equity.
  • Passion for teaching 10‑ and 11‑year‑olds in a hands‑on, inquiry‑based learning environment.
Curriculum Overview

5th‑grade math focuses on the study of arithmetic, rational numbers, decimals, statistics, problem solving, and geometry. The science curriculum covers force, motion, and simple machines, exploring variables as a function of experimental design, science expo (students work in groups to design experiments), and ends the year with a geology study.

Key Responsibilities
  • Teach math and science curriculum responsive to students’ developmental capacities and needs.
  • Document lesson plans and develop comprehensive curriculum with guidance from supervisor and in collaboration with the math/science team.
  • Differentiate instruction to support group and individual learning.
  • Utilize materials‑based discovery approaches and inquiry‑based pedagogy.
  • Incorporate technology into the classroom when applicable to enhance learning.
  • Apply both standards‑based assessment and progressive teaching methods.
  • Serve as co‑advisor and homeroom teacher, organizing and maintaining a positive classroom community.
  • Provide extra help to students as necessary during activity periods and morning math.
  • Write student reports and present at curriculum events.
  • Communicate regularly with individual families and others who support students’ learning and growth.
  • Collaborate with classroom teachers and specialists to support curriculum and children’s development.
  • Maintain and share the math/science rooms in collaboration with the math/science team.
  • Attend and engage in regular planning meetings and supervision meetings.
  • Attend and participate in weekly faculty meetings.
  • Engage in professional development and lifelong learning.
  • Contribute to internal coverage within the math/science team and across the school.
  • Fulfill weekly community duties as assigned.
